At what age did you swap lidded cups for unlidded?

Presumably this is easiest in the Summer, as with potty-training!

The best place to start is at the table / high chair to prevent running around with an open cup!

Mine could manage at about age 1.

Smithagain · 30/01/2007 20:56

I introduced an open cup at mealtimes from weaning, so about 6 months. She got the hang of it within a few weeks. (But we still use lidded cups/beakers when we are out and about or not sitting at the table.)

Smithagain · 30/01/2007 20:57

I should say that she never used a bottle at all - went straight from breast to beaker - so it might have been easier for her than if she'd had to "unlearn" the teat-sucking motion.

I taught DD at just 2, when I was potty training her as I was ready for mess. DS (2 next week) has been practising in the bath and often finishes DD's drinks but can't be trusted with a cup away from the table.

Bozza · 31/01/2007 08:57

2 in my case. She is now 2 1/2 and never has lidded cups, although sports bottles if we are out and about. But that is the same as DS who is 5.

edam · 31/01/2007 08:57

I'm embarrassed to admit ds often has a lid and he's 3.5! I always offer 'shut cup or open cup' and he usually chooses shut. I make sure he has a lid if we aren't in the kitchen as I know he'd spill it and I really can't be doing with any more cleaning up (have enough with the regular cat sick/felt tip/etc. etc. etc.)

He drinks from open cups quite happily at school/childminder's/out and about though.

thehairybabysmum · 31/01/2007 09:16

Boots do a cup that has 3 different lids, a spout one and then one which is like an unlidded but actually has a cover on which just lets a little bit out so they gradually get the hang of drinking withiout spout. 3rd lid is just a rim really but shaped i think to make it easier for them (?) but we're not onto that one yet.

My DS 13 mths has been using this for a while. Only in highchair though as can be messy!!

Kelly1978 · 31/01/2007 09:16

1, 2?
I'm sure I carried on with it until about 3 or 4! Not worth the hassle and the mess to do it sooner. The dts will be carrying on with lidded cups for at least another year or two, they have the ones with pop up straws.

schneebly · 31/01/2007 09:21

DS2 has just turned 2 and has most drinks from an unlidded cup now but we have had a few spills.

Toothyboy · 31/01/2007 09:24

Same as edam. Ds1 is 3.9 and prefers lidded cups. He has unlidded at the table and at preschool. I can't be bothered with the mess if it gets spilt!

Stiglet · 31/01/2007 09:47

DD is 2 but she has a steady cup We still use a lidded flask like cup when out and about though.

portonovo · 31/01/2007 09:57

From about 6-9 months when in the house and sitting at a table. Probably from about 2 when out and about.

I introduced all mine to straws from about 12 months too, just gave another option for when out and about.

Longlegs1972 · 31/01/2007 09:59

Can yo buy the steadycup in places like Boots?

dejags · 31/01/2007 10:00

straws from about a year

open cup without straw from 2

marymillington · 31/01/2007 10:02

teeny tiny glass (shot glass at first) or cup from about 7 or 8 months at the table. got the hang of it very quickly. i still remember the first time we tried it, he was so excited! still has a beaker at bedtime though at 2.4

Stiglet · 31/01/2007 10:14

I'm not sure whether they have them in boots. I got mine from the Jojo maman bebe shop. If you google there are lots online.
