Anyone know of any decent baby-food pots?

MY DS (5 months) is wolfing down his solids with a lot of pleasure, but I've tried him on Hipp organic pots and he turns his nose up at them. I thought he was just not used to it but I tasted them and they are pretty awful (taste like cardboard, consistency ok). Does anyone have particular brands and flavours of baby food that they find decent? It'd be mainly for travelling and as a back-up when I don't have time to cook.

DD liked Cow and Gate organic pots best. They also came out well in some taste tests of fruit purees in one of the papers (Guardian or Observer, I can't remember which). Tesco sells them. Hipp's organic fruit puree in plastic pots is nice, though. We still put it on her cereal (she is 17 months).

hipp are better for fruit pots ( as lond as its the fruit only or fruit and rice)

baby organix are better for dinner pots. (potato and sweetcorn good at this age)

gloworm · 08/06/2004 20:50

as long as...not as LOND as!!!!

My ds didn't like the Hipp stuff either. He liked Organix carrot & broccoli, most of the Boots ones, and then after six months one of his favourites was the Cow & Gate "orchard chicken" one (can't remember if it was organic or not.)

My 5 mth old dd loves Heinz mums own. Out of interest Marsup, what home cooking are you giving your ds. I am struggling, my imagination at the moment doesn't go further than stewed apple, puree banana, mash potato, or mash carrots. I'd be grateful for any ideas

skerriesmum · 08/06/2004 21:12

mushed avocado (with a little cream cheese, after 6 months?)

Thanks for all these suggestions, everyone. I'll just have to go further afield than the local Morrissons, since it doesn't have Cow and Gate. Deeno, I'm also a bit stumped for inspiration for home cooking - I want to wait another month before introducing too many other things (cheese, etc) so keep repeating the same dishes. He absolutely adores pureed sweet potato (steamed, blended and mixed with a bit of formula), carrot and courgette (not together); didn't like potato and if I do carrot and potato he is not as keen as carrot on its own. Banana and a teaspoon of yoghurt with formula is v popular too. Steamed organic pear pureed was so good he had a temper tantrum when there was none left. I'm still occasionally worried that he might pop after a meal but he hasn't so far so I guess it;s ok and he just has an extra stretchy tummy.

ds used to like the boots "international" ones - sweet and sour pork, mexican chicken etc. At 2 he still has fairly exotic tastes and likes curry and chilli!

Katzguk, just read your message, will check Amazon for the cookery book. Shall try dd on pureed pear, Marsup. I too worry that dd may pop. She just loves her food. I was worrying that I may be feeding her too much. But she just keeps opening her mouth and letting me shovel it in so I guess she must be happy. I was a bit worried when I heard my brother in laws 13 mth ds weighs only 7 lbs more than my 5mth old dd. But then she was a big babe at birth and both myself and dp are tall. Anyway, don't you just love chubby babies . Seriously tho', do you think it's possible to overfeed??

marsup · 09/06/2004 22:58

Oh no, I tried Hipp pear and apple dessert today - tasted it first and it seemed pretty nice to me - and Monsieur made a horrible face and spat it out. I insisted a bit and he did eventually eat most of the pot, but coming from a boy who wolfs down home-made stewed apple or pear this is a bit odd. Could it be that it is too smooth? my puree has lumpy bits. I still haven't gone in to town to get the Cow and Gate savouries. Deeno, try the sweet potato - it is v yummy and also filling. NB about popping: my baby is only small and my main concern is not chubbiness but the fact that his slim frame develops an ENORMOUS pot belly after meals (don't know where it goes in between, but I suspect a lot of it comes out in leaked pee that soaks all his bed linen).

You are probably right - too smooth. I have been giving lumpier purees just recently. I will definitely give the sweet potato a go. Just nipped into the kitchen to check the packet - dd loves cow & gate vegetable casserole. Could have sworn I'd got it from local Morrisons, may be wrong tho.

My dd is 5 1/2 months and we love the Annabel Karmel book - it's fabulous! Her current favourite combination is Carrot/Courgette/Potato/Apple mixed all together with a bit of baby rice and apple juice - she just loves it! I make it in vast quanities and freeze it - that way I only cook for her once a week but she gets homemade goodies every day. I've tried her on the store bought ones but she refuses - we had to fly to the UK and then stay in a hotel a couple of weeks ago so I needed to use ready made meals.....in the end she accepted store bought apple puree......so that's all she had for 4 days....poor little munchkin.
I too worry about her popping, I just trust that she knows when she's had enough (she still manages to squeeze in 5 mins of boob before bed though....funny that!
If anyone is in the US then Gerber babyfood is pretty good regarding it's ingredients and cooking methods - that's the brand we tried her on (miss fussypants prefers mummy's cooking sadly)......maybe I'm growing a future food critic!
