Ok I need to order champagne or v nice sparkling white wine from Tesco (to get £40 back in points) for my wedding reception. Please could anybody who is in the know recommend from what they have. I am happy to have a good white wine if that is going to be a nicer thing than cheaper champagne IYSWIM we are just having a finger buffet and we are only have alcohol for a toast etc.

TIA (a very stressed and desperate bride)

Tesco's do their own brand of champagne which is very "reasonably" priced, about £15 I think, and won a whole load of awards a year or so ago above all the usual champagne houses. HTH.

Hi, I'm by no means an expert but did work at Threshers so have tried quite a bit of wine. Out of what Tesco do I would recommend: Lindauer Rose, Jacobs creek sparking chardonnay/pinot noir or Hardys sparking chardonnay/pinot noir. These new world sparkings IMO our just as good as the real thing just can't be called champagne officially!
Also Italian prosecco is very nice
Although everyone has different taste so why don't you try a couple first

I am with Cod Prosecco is vomit in a glass.

A good sparkling Pinot Noir sparkling would be soooooooooooooooooo much better.

Lindauer springs to mind.

satine · 30/01/2007 22:29

Oooh, I like Prosecco. But a good sparkling chardonnay is very nice, you don't have to have champagne, imo. But bubbles def make it more of an Occasion!

Stressed and desperate? Buy one, spend a pleasant evening trying it out, feel less stressed, buy it. Call it Essential Research.
I wouldn't buy a champagne either though, if you want to save a bit of cash, a sparkling white can be very good.

Itcouldhavebeenbeetroot · 30/01/2007 22:31

escos own champagne is good

SherlockLGJ · 30/01/2007 22:38

And Tescos is good as well.

You OK ??

That can not have been an easy trip.

not really a wine fan to do lots of essential research just want to get the stuff ordered so it's another job done!!!!!! How many glasses out of a standard bottle 3 or 4? Won't be toasting glasses, at least I don't have to buy lots only allowed one glass per adult as it's in church hall! How many soft drinks do you reckon per adult in 2 to 3 hours?????

If you order from a caterer, they usually reckon on 6 glasses per bottle, but of course if you're providing the glasses it depends on your glass size. If everyone is drinking, I'd calculate one drink per 45 mins per person, which should be ok.
A couple of thoughts:

  • If you don't like wine, why not ask everyone to toast you in YOUR favourite drink, it's your wedding after all.
  • I went to a VERY swanky do recently where they were serving elderflower cordial as an alternative to champagne, each glass had a couple of leaves of mint and a couple of ice cubes, served in a tall champagne glass. Very classy and a nice alternative to orange juice.
