Breakfast for a 19m.o. advice needed

Hi! My 19-month old DD still has a bottle (of full fat milk) every morning. It takes about 10 minutes to warm in a bottle warmer. While waiting she usually has a couple of biscuits or rice crackers.

Does this sound about right? She doesn't like mushy baby porridgy cereals and I haven't been able to think of what else she should be eating in the mornings.

Recently I put some cereal for bottles into her morning milk but she just stops drinking once she gets to the sludgy part!

What do other parents do with the LOs while breakfast is being prepared? And by the way, should she be off the morning bottle by now?

Thanks for your ideas and advice.

My dd is 15 months and she has Brioche rolls before her bottle and I do try to give her some fruit, banana or satsuma at the moment. I do however own up to microwaving her bottles so she gets it all at once, milk fruit and brioche.

She will eat a small amount of cereal, toast or yoghurt if I give it to her. Her main priority is eating the same as her brothers so whatever I give them, she gets.

lulumama · 29/01/2007 12:29

i wouldn;t put anything in her bottle at all...apart from milk !

well...toast fingers..nice wholemeal toast, with some butter and a scrape of marmite

scrambled egg

i sometimes give dd a bowl of dry shreddies to pick at , or some raisins, banana and grapes

a cut up apple is good

rice crakers with some cheese rather than biscuits, i think

porridge made from proper oats is less sludgy..she can eat 'grown up' food now, she doesn;t need baby cereals...

weetabix with warm milk , if not too much milk is less soggy

HTH

egg takes 1 minute in the microwave..break egg into suitable bowl , with splash of milk , 30 seconds.....stir..then another 20 - 30 seconds...stir.....tip onto plate/ bowl!

jellybellie · 29/01/2007 12:40

Weetabix and banana mashed together with warm milk is a favourite with ds (16 mths)or oatibix or ready brek then followed by a bottle of milk.

FarawayWe · 29/01/2007 13:03

Thanks for all the tips! Yes, I hadn't realised but she's getting a bit "too old" for baby cereals Don't know why I suddenly thought of including them now. She usually only has milk in the bottle, I think I was trying to beef it up a little as she doesn't usually eat anything in the morning (except the rice crackers/baby biscuits).

We don't have a microwave so warming up milk for cooking purposes is a bit fiddly, as I have to stand at the stove watching the milk. Will try scrambled eggs, perhaps put her in the kitchen eating raisins (which she loves) while warming up milk for porridge or scrambling eggs.

When do toddlers stop having morning bottles and only have one at bedtime? I'm not concerned about "conforming" but would like to know common practice. Thanks again!

my 18 month old still has a bottle first thing, although we have bought sippy cups today !!! and she likes it so far !! be interesting to see what happens in the morning! toddlers still need milk...so don;t cut it out entirely

also, yoghurt is good....maybe a bowl of yoghurt and some sliced fruit...

DD has a fondness for mushrooms, with her scrambled egg ! i have also been known to give her spanish omlette ( cooked the day beore ) for brekky !

IdreamofClooney · 29/01/2007 13:33

I give my DS (19 mths) a sippy cup of milk first thing - I don;t warm it up he drinks it straight from the fridge while I shower and get dressed.

I then put him in the high chair for breakfast - usually weeabix but he has now developed a liking for shreddie type things. He turns his nose up at porridge but will eat fruit toast with butter. I tend to give him a bowl of cereal with a few extra dry bits for him to pick on and then share my toast and OJ with him.

He only gets one warmed bottle of milk last thing at night - I am curious as to when he will be "too grown up" for that so if anyone has opinion do comment!

DD is 15 months and not had milk in morn since she was about 9 months (ish) i just got her a tippee cup and put it in there and she lost interest, only using bottle for comfort. All babies different, dd's cousin has only just come off bottle and is on tippee cup and he not really interested, think the bottle def a comfort thing for him too.

She has big bowl of either weetabix, shreddies, readybreak (sometimes mix some hot chocolate power in as a treat) (all in warm full fat milk) and then sometimes a slice of toast afterwards but this is usaully on weekends otherwise she normally has mid moring snack. Also she has ahd porridge.readybreak mixed with the jars of fruit puree as it makes it tastier.

Lullabyloo · 29/01/2007 14:08

agree with lulu-don't put anything else in her bottles to bulk it,you might put her off milk altogether.
she's more than ready for proper breakfasts now
ds likes

porridge( made with real oats)with some kind of dried fruit-cranberries,chopped unsulphered apricots, raisins etc and topped with stewed apple
*
boiled egg & soldiers

Plain yoghurt with manuka honey drizzled on & seeds to sprinkle & plate of chopped fresh fruit or bowl of berries to dip in.
**
biobiz with hot milk & mashed banana
**
brown rice crispies & spelt puffs
with fruit salad

avocado,carrot,apple,basil,lemon smoothie
**
scrambled egg with mushrooms & rye toast

warmed berry compote & yoghurt on eggy bread

Dorset cranberry museli
with plate of chopped fresh fruit
**
also do a fresh juice most days too
either fruit & veg based or just veg

Hope this helps

elclose · 29/01/2007 20:01

lulabyloo what is biobiz?

chocolateshoes · 29/01/2007 20:13

DS (19mths) has milk straight fromt eh fridge in his tommee tippee beaker while I make breakfast: Weetabix, Oatibix or ReadyBrek...with Shreddies or Cheerios as a topping. He then picks out the raisins from my muesli. At the weekend he sometimes gets brioche, croissant or toast if we're having that, but only after his cereal. He also usually eats halkf a banana - not mashed. DP sometimes makes porridge - oats, soya milk (2 mins on medium in mico - leave to stand - then 40 secs) with molasses which DS loves.

How do you survive withput a microwave!!!??

Lullabyloo · 29/01/2007 20:24

um it's kinda like organic weetabix

Lullabyloo · 29/01/2007 20:25

don't use a microwave-never found the need for one

bambi06 · 29/01/2007 20:28

eggy bread..basically bread left to soak in beaten egg with a dash of cinnamon and then fried ..delicious...brioche rolls....porridge...homemade banana muffins...eggs in various forms... my dd at this age was eating mackerel for breakfast with crudites..chesse slices, tomatoes, etc..my dh is medditeranean [sp?] so tends to be healthy continental breafasts ..yummy

FarawayWe · 29/01/2007 20:31

Well, we used to have a microwave handed down from mum, many years ago. It was only ever used to re-heat things, and DH doesn't like the concept of leftovers (so we cook small quantities) so even that wasn't a big call on the microwave.

When we moved, we decided not to sacrifice kitchen space to an appliance we hardly ever needed.

And then when we bought our own place and got to choose the kitchen layout, again, it seemed silly to have to accommodate this chunky thing that we couldn't really justify.

My real reason for not wanting one is that I know what it's like having to clean the inside with food splatterings and encrusted cheese and whatnot. And you never really get rid of what's baked on.

We survive by heating things up in the steamer (holey pot within pot from Ikea) or warming up milk in a small saucepan or preheating the oven (eg for leftover pizza for me!).

I don't really miss a microwave, but I do sometimes wish I could prepare things more quickly for DD when she's hungry.

DS2 (16 months) has a bottle on waking and then ds1 & ds2 have the following for breakfast. Its a 3 course affair, I find that they get fed up with cereal every day so we go for variety.

cereal (appricot wheats/shreddies/wheetabix/rice crispies) generally with a few raisins thrown in too)

or

baked beans & toast soldiers

or

scrambled eggs & toast

or

peanut butter on wholemeal toast

fruit (bannana, grapes, pear, apple)

yoghurt

My dd,21 months, still has a morning cup of milk but more often than not, she doesn't drink it all. Most days she has weetabix with warm milk and a banana and some days she has toast butter and jam and a piece of fruit. She has a bed time cup of milk too but doesn't always drink it all.

Anisse · 29/01/2007 22:53

marmite on toast fingers

eggy bread

pancakes (if dd2 is making them for us)

mashed up boiled egg in a cup with bread and butter chopped in

homemade fruit smoothie thru a straw

porridge

anything really (he is 10 mths)

mollymawk · 29/01/2007 23:01

My ds2 is 19 mths as well and he has milk at bedtime but not in the morning - can't remember since when I'm afraid. I have tried to get him to drink milk from a cup of some kind but without success so far! He won't drink it cold either. For breakfast he likes Special K and Crunchy Bran (probably both evil and sugar-filled) and toast - and generally whatever ds1 or I am having he wants that too. And ordinary porridge but this is probably a pain for you to do without a microwave. And he likes tinned peaches (very 1950s)!
