Seriously. I just prepped 7 billion of them for a curryish thing, and they take forever, and for what? Gah.

I have heard chefs saying they taste far superior to onions

Skyler · 28/01/2007 18:48

Oh because they are much tastier than onions. It will be delicious!!

Biglips · 28/01/2007 18:49

they taste much nicer than onions

did they kill your eyes?? as they stung mine like hell and took me ages to peel them!!

SherlockLGJ · 28/01/2007 18:49

You do know if you put them in boiling water first they are easier to peel don't you ??

Blandmum · 28/01/2007 18:49

The taste nice. they also stay together better when you slow cook them

TheArmadillo · 28/01/2007 18:50

shallots taste so much better than onions, but they do make your eyes water more. I always use them (but then dp prepares all the veg )

MrsBadger · 28/01/2007 18:51

not worth it for a curry imo

v good in more european-type dishes where they're a main flavour ingredient

NotQuiteCockney · 28/01/2007 19:41

Hadn't known about the boiling water, will try that next time.

They didn't make my eyes water, but I didn't cut them up - kept them whole.

I probably would normally use them in a European dish, but I had to use them up, and wanted to make a curry, so ...
