Help green junk on chicken!

pookey · 27/01/2007 20:29

I have just cooked 2 chickens I bought at a farmers market, the first was fine, but I have just started ripping off the skin from the other chicken in prep for leaving it in the fridge and there is green junk at the neck end (i think its the neck, the wing end anyway) and it has stained the flesh. I ate a bit of the skin withiut realising and maybe it is paranoia but it was a bit slimey! should i discard the whole chicken or just the 'contaminated' parts. i didnt wash the chicken but I am sure they were ready to cook and dejibbleted ?

No wise words to add, but I didn't want to ignore this message. Poor you!

If you cooked it really well then hopefully you will be OK. Since you have tested it out, I suppose that it can't hurt to keep the chicken until you find out if you are OK, if you want to hang onto it. Personally, I think I'd err on the side of caution.

Hope that you are OK.

WideWebWitch · 27/01/2007 20:57

Cooking kills most things, I wouldn't worry and would just get rid of dodgy looking bit.

pinkbubble · 27/01/2007 20:58

I would chuck it! Not even wait to see if I was OK, we maybe stronger than our little ones

morningpaper · 27/01/2007 20:58

Personally I would bung it if it looked dodgy at this stage but before I cook chicken (any meat) I always give it a really good SNIFF - you can smell off-meat a mile away

pookey · 27/01/2007 20:59

Thanks I am preggers so more cautious and feel a bit pukey now (psychological I am sure) i dont think it can have been cleaned out thoroughly. I have taken quite a lot away and thrown but want to use the rest if safe. Anyone please help! Waiting to see if anyone replies before deciding to wrap and put in fridge or throw.

hehe put a picture on Members area

Bung it, have some Ready Brek

Rhubarb · 27/01/2007 21:03

Keep it in case you are ill. You might need it.

You should be ok if it was cooked well. Perhaps the green gunk came from something the chicken brushed against? I am presuming you bought them cooked? If the green stuff is fresh looking and not cooked then chances are that it came off something else.

pookey · 27/01/2007 21:03

Sorry to sound ungrateful, thankyour for the replies! anyone else chuck or keep? so far seems to be more chucks than keeps...

southeastastra · 27/01/2007 21:04

just cut off the gooey bit and keep the rest

pookey · 27/01/2007 21:06

It was a raw chicken I just stuck it in the oven without paying much attention but from my investigations post cooking it is def from the chicken (where is the nauseaus face emoticon) Oh man there goes the yummy risotto Well it probably wouldnt have been that yummy but still

Rhubarb · 27/01/2007 21:06

Perhaps it's an alien chicken with green blood?

fishie · 27/01/2007 21:09

you think something was left behind when it was butchered? neck bit is always a bit slimey anyway.
i think it would be ok to get rid of the dodgy bit and keep the rest. it sounds unpleasant rather than off.

also, i am curious, why were you taking skin off to put it in fridge?

pookey · 27/01/2007 21:13

not helpful! Maybe it had some yukky illness urgh afraid dp says chuck as he will want to heave thinking about alien chicken when eating it! asta la vista alien chicken ... I am supposed to be economising sigh. This has not been a very good fisrt experience of farmers market.

On a sep note DP got bored while I was at the farmers market and shaved his bits - looks a bit like a raw chicken himself, no green bits thankfully

southeastastra · 27/01/2007 21:15

why did he do that?

Skribble · 27/01/2007 21:15

LOL .

pookey · 27/01/2007 21:16

Fishie I was taking the skin off cos I thought it might get really fatty otherwise? I was trying to be clever by cooking 2 chickens and make loads of meals in an economy drive. Not an experienced cook so naturally its all gone wrong!

OP posts:
fishie · 27/01/2007 21:17

def avoid farmers market in the future pookey.
or take dp with you. sod the chicken, that is too high a price.

WideWebWitch · 27/01/2007 21:17

You're not supposed to wash a chicken before you cook it!

If you're pregnant, I think I'd err on side of caution and chuck it. I had salmonella while preg with dd and it wasn't nice (she's fine though, she's 3!)

pookey · 27/01/2007 21:18

I really couldnt say why he did that!! he was bored app but I think it was a cry for help cos we have been ill and I'm preggers so he hasnt had his manly needs met for a while!

pookey · 27/01/2007 21:18

pookey · 27/01/2007 21:25

blimey I dread to think fishie He is getting itchy app so hopefully he has learned his lesson !

Chicken now in the bin, lets hope the foxes keep away from our street until the bins are collected.

The exact green thing you describe was on a chicken we were cooking yesterday, it was a free-range 'Finest' from Tesco's. Showed it to dh and we both decided it was probably just part of it's bits and pieces and nowt to worry about, anyway, we had a great roast chicken and we are all still standing!!
