How old before DD should have smoothies?

My DD is just over a year old, when can she have fruit smoothies? I iask because I keep reading that fruit juice should be well diluted, so not sure if smoothies are a bad thing for her.

You could make the smoothie with whole milk instead of juice. Or just dilute the juice before you use it. I would say if it is something she will drink then there's no reason why she can't have it at her age just pick your fruits carefully. Don't use too many citrusy fruits all at once. I started ds off with whole milk, bananas and strawberries. Could also make them with yoghurt??

i think smoothies not made with ADDED sugar are fine, just the natural sweetness of the fruit. my ds eats grapes, blueberries, strawberries, bananas etc. so don't see why it would be any different if they were whizzed up with yoghurt or milk...

Thanks u two. She's loaded with the cold at the mo and thought smoothies might be a good way to pack some vits into her to help her fight it. I have mangoes, plums, bananas, oranges and blueberries in so will give a few concotions a go over next few days. Wouldn't do me any harm to get some down me too, as I hate the texture of fruit to eat, but know I need to get it in me somehow!

Its a really good thing to have with your brekkie, is a great way to add to your 5 a day and to use up fruit before it goes off!!!! So winning all round!! Agree with the not adding any sugar too. Can you tell I love smoothies??

MerryMarigold · 27/01/2007 21:59

i love them too, but washing up the blender is a bit of a 'mare! too lazy for everyday...

My ds has smoothies made with frozen berries (raspberries, straberries, cherries, red and blackcurrants), bluberries, pomegranate and pressed apple juice (diluted). Or milk and yoghurt. He loves them. He likes tropical fruit too with bananas and frozen tropical smoothie mix (mangoes and stuff) from sainsburys with diluted juice. He is 16 mths. He has one every morning with his breakfast and slurps it all up!

put water in the blender after you make them, whizz it up then it washes easily!

Agree, smoothies great idea for breakfast.

Surely no one adds sugar anyway?

MerryMarigold · 29/01/2007 11:42

not sure if bought ones add sugar - or if you are using fruit juices with added sugar then it is indirectly adding sugar. didn't mean people spooning sugar into the blender! most fruit is sweet enough...

Just checked innocent smoothies ingredients and there's nothing but fruit. I use them diluted a bit (kind of half and half) to take out during the day because homemade ones go a bit yukky if not drunk straight away. But the innocent kids smoothies are quite a bit thinner than the normal ones so they are easier to drink in a beaker.

I got a American smoothie book from the library and nearly every recipe said add sugar or honey to taste - and the ones that didn't said "add ice-cream".

I occasionally make chocolate shakes with icecream but my smoothies are fruit and juice and are sweet enough.

I'm of to make one now. I have an addiction.!

I just made one too! DD (7) hates them, just tried bribing her to drink it but she told me it was disgusting. At least one of my children will grow up healthily!!!! How can 2 children brought up the same be so different???? Ds had for supper an oatibix, banana, blueberries, milk and plain yoghurt whizzed up. He loves it and it sends him sleep with a big full belly.

i always do banana, yogurt, strawberries or frozen berries and some milk also add a handfull of porridge oats sometimes both my kids love em!! ds is 15 months i give him a straw and he loves it
