I seen them at the supermarket (tinned) and thought they sound healthy i will buy them as I am trying to adapt the way we eat by making it more heathier.

What on earth do I do with them????

Thought curry but wouldn't even know where to start with that either lol

You can make curry with both together or separately. Chickpea patties, falafel are made from chickpeas, hearty stews with both chick peas and green lentils. They are quite versatile and tasty.

Puree the chickpeas with olive oil and garlic (and tahini paste if you can find it) bit of lemon juice, voila....hummus!

DH loves them warmed up in the microwave, bit of good olive oil and garlic on top, maybe some crumbled cheese (goats cheese is lovely) and parsley. It´s actually very tasty. Add anything you like - chopped tomatoes, spring onions, bits of ham. Like a warm salad.

Delia has a nice lentil and bacon soup recipe.

Chickpea curry with spinach

Chop onion and garlic. Heat the oil in a large saucepan, and fry chopped onions and garlic for a few minutes over a moderate heat. Add 1 tsp each ground cumin, coriander and turmeric, and 1/2 tsp chilli powder. Stir some more before adding tsp of flour and cook for a further couple of minutes. Add water slowly, bring to the boil and then add the drained chickpeas. Simmer for about 10 minutes then add salt or veg stock cube and the spinach. Cook for a couple of minutes until it has wilted, then serve with rice

Chickpea pattie/burger

In a large bowl, mash a tin of drained chickpeas with a potato masher. Stir in finely chopped onions, carrots, tomato purée and egg and mix well. Season to taste. Divide the mixture into 4 and shape into 4 flat burgers. Coat the outside of each burger with plain flour. Place in the fridge for 1 hour. Grill for 3-4 minutes on each side, turning carefully. Serve the chickpea patties in soft baps with accompaniments.

Green lentils can be added to any meat or vegetarian meal to bulk it out. Also, you can use it replace mince in meals like cottage pie, bolognese sauce etc.

With the lentil bolognese, I just replaced the mince with lentils and cooked in the same way but for longer.

Just checked by files and found this.

Green lentil curry with potatoes and vegetables

Place the lentils ( about 2 cups) in plenty of water to cover and cook until tender. Drain the lentils in a collander, reserving 2 cups of the cooking liquid, and set aside. Heat the oil in a large saucepan over medium heat and add the chopped onion, garlic clove, ginger, mushrooms, and courgette. Cook until the vegetables are tender, stirring occasionally. Add 1 tsp each ground cumin, coriander and turmeric, and 1/2 tsp chilli powder, cook for a few minutes, add tin of tomatoes and cook for 4 to 5 minutes more. Add the lentils and reserved cooking liquid, add diced potatoes, chopped carrots and cook over low heat for 1 hour, stirring occasionally. Season to taste. Add the broccoli and cook for another 5 to 10 minutes until broccoli is fork tender. Remove from the heat and serve with basmati rice.

Oh I second that Jambuttie.

Would you cook your chickpea patties in a george forman grill Speedy?

indignatio · 29/01/2007 20:15

I would buy dried rather than tined puy (green) lentils as you tend to cook them for a while in say - sausage casserole, game casserole, cottage pie. With orange lentils i tend to make dahl to go with a meat curry

I have not got a George Foreman grill but I don't see why you could not grill the chickpea patties in there.

Hope you enjoy them!

I add a tin of chick peas to baked beans and a tin of chilli kidney beans. Makes the baked beans more exciting! Really nice on baked potato!

Monkeytrousers · 31/01/2007 21:27

Was a bit too sloppy and ended up as mush. Don't think I drained the lentils enough
