So if you don't eat added sugar then what on earth do you do for pudding?

It's all very well this no-added-sugar healthy eating lark, but three days in and I am at a loss for my pudding options.

Am I destined to a lifetime of Greek yoghurt and fruit for afters??

Confused

Use honey or dates instead of refined sugar. Or stevia.

gettingtogreat · 01/07/2016 13:55

Wow lots of replies there... very interesting.

Can I ask... those of you who don't eat pudding... are you slim?

I'm a size 8/10 (but still have a less-than-toned baby belly!). DH wears 30 inch trousers, so yes I guess we're slimmer than average.

In our house, we don't eat sugary stuff generally unless we've been for very long runs. Then, I can happily put away a Mars bar or similar. If I'm at a wedding or something, too, I'll join in with dessert. And really enjoy it.

Dontyouopenthattrapdoor · 01/07/2016 13:59

70% dark chocolate melted and mixed with Greek yoghurt / Creme fraiche/ cream if you're feeling naughty.

Rice pudding made with sweetener

Statelychangers · 01/07/2016 14:01

We don't have puddings, we often have a few cheeses to nibble from, dcs will have 1 or 2 squares of chocolate or a small biscuit. Not joyless either, we love food and we eat very well - we just avoid sugar after dinner and yes we are all slim.Smile

FelixFelix · 01/07/2016 14:03

We don't eat pudding apart from sometimes on a weekend. I'm a size 14 so far from slim! I didn't realise people did puddings every night. I've got a hankering for a treacle sponge with custard now.

notgettingyounger · 01/07/2016 14:06

I'm another who would only think of serving pudding if I had a dinner party or it was someone's birthday and even then we would probably hardly eat any of it as every one is full after the main course.

In answer to the OP, yes we are all very slim but then we also run a lot too so it might be that... I think that if you don't eat sugar for a certain amount of time then you don't want it or miss it after a while. There again, I never liked sweets as a child so I must be odd!

Also not joyless as we love food - it simply doesn't occur to us to eat pudding.

Glittershoes22 · 01/07/2016 14:13

I grew up in a pudding household but don't do it myself. Largely because we dont have a sweet tooth. We do like wine and are partial to a chocolate truffle or a couple of spoonfuls of ice-cream once or twice a week!

I'm also the only person in my family not overweight, not sure that can be blamed on the pudding though I was always the odd one out!

Statelychangers · 01/07/2016 14:17

My parents eat pudding every evening, Dad has Type II and seems to have eaten much more sugar since he was diagnosed. I love sugar - but eating it makes me gain weight and feel pretty rough....it's not worth it.
Best ever chocolate mousse - 50 g 85% chocolate & one raw egg.

Pinkheart5915 · 01/07/2016 14:17

I have pudding everyday and Except when pregnant I've never been bigger than a size 12

CheesyWeez · 01/07/2016 14:20

I would just like to encourage you to stay off the sugar. I gave up refined sugar 10 weeks ago. I have lost 11 pounds and more importantly it seems to have stopped my cystitis/infections which I used to constantly suffer from.

Within only a few days my tastes changed and ordinary milk and other foods started to taste sweeter and since then to my amazement I have started to prefer my porridge with salt (I add milk and cream, which now tastes sweet to me).

I have to say I used to put away whole bars of chocolate and whole packets of biscuits Blush

Now I cut up fruit into bite sized pieces and mix them together (eg. 1 apple, orange and banana in a tupperware in the kitchen) and eat that before I get the munchies.

When people offer me a piece of cake I am now honestly happy with a very small piece.

I stick to fruit/yog/cheese for dessert and sometimes have cocoa before bed with sweetener if I'm feeling in need

StealthPolarBear · 01/07/2016 14:20

Surely dark chocolate has added sugar??

Yika · 01/07/2016 14:24

We have pudding every lunch and every dinner, without fail. We are slim. Very rarely eat sweet things in between meals but like to end a meal with something sweet tasting.

Majority of the time it's fruit though.

Some no sugar options:

  • baby fruit compote - it's nice and sweet with no added sugar, not sure how they achieve it (v. slowly cooked down?)
  • as above mixed with fromage frais
  • dried fruit, nuts, cheese
Yika · 01/07/2016 14:26

Full fat yoghurt with a smoothie mixed in.

Statelychangers · 01/07/2016 14:28

Of course Dark Chocolate has added sugar but it has less sugar than milk chocolate.
You could buy Cavalier Dark Chocolate - sweetened with stevia - it tastes really good but it doesn't agree with me.

JasperDamerel · 01/07/2016 14:29

I don't eat puddings much, but these are all nice:

Berries and cream.

Stewed fruit and cream.

(Cheating slightly) very very dark (85% minimum cocoa solids) whipped with cream into a mousse.

Greek yogurt with vanilla extract.

Fruit and coconut milk ice lollies.

Rice pudding made with coconut milk with mangoes in lime juice, or with raspberries.

Fresh fruit.

Apple or banana slices fried in butter or coconut oil and sprinkled with cinnamon. Or you can fry the bananas with chilli and add some vodka.

Frozen banana and raspberry ice cream (or frozen banana, peanut butter and cocoa ice cream).

HeadDreamer · 01/07/2016 14:30

Don't eat pudding here normally unless you count fruit.

And yes very slim.

I don't see why you need pudding? It's just 3 days! We have it on special occasions.

Yika · 01/07/2016 14:31

Jasper the rice pud sounds good - could you share the full recipe? I'm not even trying to avoid sugar but I'd give that one a try!

sashh · 01/07/2016 14:36

Pancakes.

NicknameUsed · 01/07/2016 14:37

"Do people really have pudding every day?"

My thoughts as well. I don't know anyone who has a pudding every day. We do occasionally, or we might have a slice of cake if there happens to be some in the house.

We just tend to fill up on the main meal and then have a cup of tea afterwards.

I'm not joyless, just not in the habit of eating pudding every day. And yes, we are all slim.

waitingforsomething · 01/07/2016 14:43

I love pudding! I eat it every day and I don't care what anyone says Wink.
Mostly yogurt and/or fruit but once a week a proper pud. I am a size 10 although I am undeserving and probably unhealthy inside. I love sugar Blush

StealthPolarBear · 01/07/2016 14:44

Yes but the question was to those who avoid added sugar entirely

Ihatechoosingnames · 01/07/2016 14:46

We don't do pudding. Never have. Well, maybe on a birthday or special occasion like that. I'm still a fatty though

StickTheDMWhereTheSunDontShine · 01/07/2016 14:48

I don't eat pudding. Simple.

PatriciaHolm · 01/07/2016 14:50

We never eat pudding. Never felt the need or desire.

Kids tend to as they eat separately during the week, but adult meals never include it.
