Where can you get decent tomatoes from? All the ones I buy lately are foul, soft and taste of nothing.

Have had Tesco, Sainsbury's, Asda and M&S - all poo.

we now frequent our local greengrocer, fresh off the vine, beautiful, will never go back now!

Janh · 03/06/2004 11:29

I get the Sainsbos taste the difference vine ones and keep them out of the fridge by a sunny window - they are pretty good. (I always have a good sniff first though, some smell more tomatoey than others.)

CountessDracula · 03/06/2004 11:30

Yep I agree. Waitrose do fantastic very tomatoes ones called Red Choice (i think)

CountessDracula · 03/06/2004 11:30

ps if you have nasty ones roast them v v slowly in the oven and they will be good for cooking or just eating

WideWebWitch · 03/06/2004 11:31

Oliveoil, organic vine tomatoes taste completely different to non organic imo. Sainsbury's are good.

JanZ · 03/06/2004 11:32

Tomatoes on the vine from Lidl.

oliveoil · 03/06/2004 11:33

Don't have a Waitrose ooop here . I have tried the Sainsbury's Taste the Diff ones and I couldn't!

I just remember toms tasting really yummy and sweet and sort of 'popping' in your mouth if you ate them whole, mmmmmmm.

Janz - , think they only do tinned ones.

A bit drastic, but I get a regular delivery from Abel & Cole of their mixed box of organic fruit and veg. Their tomatoes are wonderful - especially if you don't refridgerate, so they keep on ripening and taste best warm.

I hope the link works!

In all the desperation of finding nice tomatoes few years ago we organised a tasting session and had this incredible discovery: the ones nearest to the sell-by date are normally the best in any variety and most would last for about a week.

Tinker · 03/06/2004 11:40

Lidl do fantastic tomatoes on the vine. Or grow your own

JanZ · 03/06/2004 11:40

Oliveoil - no they don't and their veg at the moment is half price! I've been buying them for the last few weeks and they're fab! REALLY taste fresh!

Janh · 03/06/2004 11:53

oo, I get the little round ones. The big ones (and plum ones) aren't as nice - IMHO!

I have had the vine ones from Lidl, for some reason they seemed to smell better than they tasted - haven't tried any this year.

Agree with www about the organic ones btw but I never remember to look in that section! (Have only ever spotted them on the reduced trolley.)

oliveoil · 03/06/2004 11:55

I live on a main road so my home grown toms would be with eau de diesel unfortunately. There is a Lidl near me but getting dh in there would be another matter, bit of a food snob.

The other thing to do is to make sure to have the tomatoes at room temperature to ensure maximum flavour.

Furball · 03/06/2004 12:26

I had the same dilemma a few months back and I'm now hooked on Sainsburys plum tomatoes. I find their flavour very good.

moominmama86 · 03/06/2004 12:26

Another vote for Sainsbury's organic on-the-vine - yummy dipped in coarse sea salt. I'm addicted to these - and I can't stand tomatoes!

hercules · 03/06/2004 12:27

Hate tomatoes but lurve organic on the vine.

Paula71 · 04/06/2004 22:20

If you want really good tinned tomatoes for sauces and pasta the Italian ones out of Lidl are the best (better than the more expensive ones I've tried.) Also the Italian tomato puree from there is quite good.

I have noticed that the fruit and veg out of Lidl does taste better than the big supermarkets, and at a fraction of the cost, which means I buy more!

kalex · 04/06/2004 22:23

Also agree P***d off with my veg tasting lick nothing. LIved is SA for 12 years and although they didn't look as good they always tasted brill !

What is the supermarkets fasination with perfect looking F&V. When you are on the Continent it never ooks perfect but always tastes 100% better

Slinky · 04/06/2004 22:31

Get most of my tomatoes from my daddy He grows the most tastiest tomatoes (along with masses of other stuff!) - his main aim in life is to become "self-sufficient"

Other than that, could eat Cherry tomatoes by the punnet, and do like "on the Vine" varieties. I've always kept mine in the fridge, so after reading this thread, I'm going to keep "room temp".

We go to France every August where the fruit and veg is absolutely delicious - even the little campsite shop has stock of very high standard. You can actually smell the tomatoes/peaches etc without even picking them up!

OldieMum · 05/06/2004 00:18

Another vote here for organic tomatoes (and other veg) from Abel and Cole.
