Waitrose do nice Tiffin cake in their cafe but since moving to Scotland 6 months ago, I haven't found anywhere selling it apart from Tesco on the odd occasion. I would love to make my own.

Ceolas · 20/01/2007 18:02

ooh that looks yummy and soooo simple.

I made this after seeing the recipe posted here - it was lovely, but could have used far less Maltesers and biscuits for the amount of chocolate (or, of course, more chocolate ...!). I added some raisins and chopped glace cherries as well, and it was really nice.

MALTESER CHOCOLATE TIFFIN
This is based on a recipe from the Blacksmith's Coffee Shop, Belsay, north of Newcastle.

Use the best chocolate you can get (minimum 60% cocoa solids for dark; minimum 30% for milk).
100g quality dark chocolate
300g quality milk chocolate
100g butter
3 tbsp golden syrup
275g digestive biscuits, crushed
250g Maltesers

Melt the dark chocolate, 100g of milk chocolate, the butter and syrup together and then stir in the digestives. Gently stir in the Maltesers and tip into a lined Swiss-roll tin (23 x 33 cm), levelling out. Melt the remaining 200g of milk chocolate and pour over, smoothing the surface carefully. Once cold, cut into pieces.

malteser tiffin should be banned -- or carry a health warning as it is DIVINE!!

wurlywurly · 20/01/2007 18:46

ooooh the malteser one sounds even nicer.

SoupDragon · 20/01/2007 18:48

Actually, I think the Maltesers ruined the tiffin. They went soggy and spoiled the texture.

Tiffin is fabulous made with gingernuts though.

ZZMum · 20/01/2007 19:09

soggy maltesers? Never!! I have made it several times and even a few days later they are still fab..

SoupDragon · 20/01/2007 19:11

Definitly soggy. Like they go if there's a gap in the chocolate, kind of chewy.

ZZMum · 20/01/2007 19:13

weird -- sounds like the choc on maltresrs melted when mixed with the melted chocolate.. I make sureit is very cool when I mix it in... please try it again as they are divine!

WigWamBam · 20/01/2007 19:14

I didn't have any problems with my Maltesers ... apart from the fact that the recipe called for too many of them, IMO. No sogginess, no gooeyness - they stayed really crunchy.

SoupDragon · 20/01/2007 19:16

I don't think you can beat the plain tiffin actually. Sometimes I think too much tinkering goes on - the simple things are ofen best .

Miaou · 20/01/2007 19:40

OOOooh I lurve tiffin. There's a cafe in Fort William that makes fab tiffin (haven't been in for ages though )

wurlywurly · 20/01/2007 20:19

250g maltesers, is that a standard bag???

wurlywurly · 20/01/2007 20:20

or should i buy a box, just to eat the left overs

BexieID · 20/01/2007 21:16

Kewl, will try the Maltesers one first I think. I love it when they melt in the cinema and you eat it the next day as it's just one mass of Malteser.

Sainsbury's tiffin is lovely. [mmmmm emoticon]

Just like to say that the Malteaser Chocolate Tiffin was very nice indeed. Tastes much better when it's been in the fridge for 24hrs!
