What's Better - Fresh or Frozen Veg?

I'm sure I read/heard frozen was better, but somehow I feel a cheat for using it... and like it's not "right" if that makes sense. Anyway, what is better?

Many Thanks xXx

Fresh, if it's really fresh. Frozen if it's not.

Frozen veg is better, nutrients wise, than geriatric fresh veg.

Quootiepie · 16/01/2007 18:56

Oh good. It's so handy aswell

No need to be , Quootie. I use frozen mixed veg in my noodle, tofu, veg thing that I cook at the nursery.

I feel very slack just throwing the frozen veg into a pan Feel I should be peeling, chopping for at least 20 mins beforehand

Sod that!

Zingy fresh veg is fantastic. Spuds and other root veg are quite forgiving but leafy stuff doesn't keep well and it is definitely better to use frozen rather than yellowing broccoli etc.

Frozen veg is fab. DS lives on peas, often straight from the freezer

Can't you bung it in the microwave rather than a pan though? Much easier (but I'm very lazy)

Quootiepie · 16/01/2007 20:14

lol mamama! I want to get a steamer (keeps more vitamins in?) but boiling is fine for now. The microwave has never been used, and is ontop of the fridge now

its got to be fresh thats better..more minerals, vitamins some of which get lost in frozen i think and some freeze better than others - peas, always have them
but try for fresh everytime

Quootiepie · 16/01/2007 20:31

ah. Really? Knew there would be a catch!

steamer is one of the easiest and best ways to cook veg imo and you can cook more than one at same time..always use it

Jacwac · 16/01/2007 21:55

Actually, it depends on the cooking method. Although frozen veg may lose a fraction of their vitamins during the freezing process, if you cook fresh veg by boiling, then you lose about the same amount of vitamins to the cooking water. So the absolute best is probaby steaming or microwaving fresh veg (keeps more vitamins in), and steamed/microwaved frozen veg is about the same as boiled fresh veg. Does that make sense?!

tracyk · 17/01/2007 09:28

Can you steam frozen veg then?

Kaloo20 · 17/01/2007 09:47

I like the idea of all fresh veg, but unless you live or work next door to a decent supermarket and can manage almost daily visits, it's never so fresh 5 or 6 days after you bought it. It's bad enough that you never know how long it has been in transit and what it's sprayed with to keep it looking fresh without it then sitting in the fridge for nearly a week.

I went to Vietnam in November and was stunned how good the wide variety of fruit and veg tasted - then realised it is because it is all sourced in country and gets from the field to the table very quickly.

DH is a frozen veg supporter because the produce is frozen very soon after picking etc ... but I just don't see the same variety of frozen vegetables as fresh and we therefore use a mixture of both.

We buy FRESH
Potatoes
Onions
Brocolli
Carrots
Runner beans
Parsnips
Swede
Fine Beans

We buy FROZEN
Mixed Casserole veg
Chartrose carrots
Peas
Baby broad Beans
Small mixed veg (legacy ones, don't buy now to small and piddily and so obviously frozen veg)

Used to get brocolli but is too watery when done from frozen.
Oh, and I steam everything except potatoes and onions and parsnips!

I'm not what any other frozen vegetables available ..

Quootiepie · 17/01/2007 09:50

I bought brocollie, cauliflour, baby carrots and spinach all forzen the other day. There was an advert with a car that looked like a pea that said frozen was fresher? Maybe i'll google it abit. Need to buy a steamer though

i use frozen organic for the kids, but fresh for us... because i don't like the texture of frozen, but the kids don't seem to be bothered and it is much easier to offer them a variety (just a handful of this and that)... that way at least i have more chance of them eating some veg!

hannk · 17/01/2007 10:43

I always buy fresh root veg like potatoes swede etc but brocolli cauli peas etc are supposedly quick frozen whilst fresh so I always buy them and use a steamer. So much more convenient as well

oxocube · 18/01/2007 17:09

my kids hate frozen veg so I just buy fresh apart from peas which they don't like much anyway except as soup. Shame as I think its a good stand-by
