fussy friends!

Friends of my kids that is. I know this has been done before what would you have done? Dd had a couple of friends to sleep over last week. One friend is a little bit fussy compared to my kids who eat most things (not being smug, its just the way they turned out) but the other friend is a nightmare to feed. For lunch (and I know this to be true as I do lunch duty at school) she has a white roll with either chocolate sprinkles or Nutella. I think snacks are biscuits or cake.

Because I knew the friend was so fussy, I made a special 'kiddie menu' of home made burgers, chips, cucumber slices, baby tomtoes with a big fruit salad and yogurt for pudding. Friend got to the table and said "sorry oxocube, but I don't really like burgers, or tomatoes or cucumber or fruit and I don't eat that type of yoghurt thank you." She ate a chip buttie in a white roll. I felt awful as she was obviously still hungry. I offered the contents of my fridge ie cheese, ham, salami, chicken but she didn't like any of them.

The last time she came for dinner, I made chicken nuggets as I knew she ate them in Burger King but it turned out she only like shop bought ones not home made . She is in all other respects a great kid and I know her mum despairs, but what to do? Not invite again or investigate more carefully what she will eat. But I refuse to let my kids eat choc spread sandwiches for dinner!

Any similar experiences or suggestions?

is there anything healthy that she will eat - pasta? She could have it plain if she won't have the sauce.

If it was me I would tread carefully and maybe not have her round for mealtimes. I spend so much effort making sure my dc's have a good diet only for one of their friends to undo lots of good work by telling them they go to mcdonalds every week and you are not cool if you don't.

have you spoke to the parent and asked what she will eat, maybe she is just once of these children that if you offer her then she will insist that she doesnt like it.

My ds1 quite often goes to friend's houses for the day and refuses to eat anything at all [shrug]

thank goodnesss I have a ds2 who, loves his food, or I'd blame myself.

oxocube · 14/01/2007 17:25

actually she does eat spag bol, Dimplethighs - its the one decent thing I think she likes - but my kids had eaten it the day before and it was a spur of the moment invitation. Actually, I am not terribly opposed to McDonalds etc as long as its only once in a while and part of a balanced diet. I don't think it will do any real harm as long as they realise its not proper food

But I do feel bad feeding kids chip sandwiches for dinner.

mmmmmm chip sandwiches

oxocube · 14/01/2007 17:29

wurly, her mum is a friend and is quite lovely. Its true that her daughter is probably the fussiest child on earth. Its such a shame as the mum is a fab cook!! I since checked and spag bol, shop bought nuggets, chips, pancakes with choc spread and hot dogs seem to be all I could have offered. I did relent though and buy Cocopops for breakfast as I knew she hated Weetabix or eggs!!

oh oxocube am not a mcdonlads is evil type - was just upset when ds told me he wished I was cool like x's mum and took him there every week. Hate it being seen as proper food.

oxocube · 14/01/2007 17:36

DT, I'm sure you are very cool! Don't worry

if my charges freinds come for tea its fine.... they can go hungry... in the same way that if my charges dont eat they go hungry...

whilst i will normally offer a more conventional meal.... eg spag bol / cottage pie rather than kedgeree, if they dont eat i dont worry. also if they dint at leats try some and eat some they dont get anything else either.

Most of my charges friedns ae good eater tho..

tho Miss fussy came round for lunch last momday... we were having smoked cod (baked) mash and veg...

i gave her extra mash (assuming she would like it and starve on the rest but she surprised me eating EVERY bit of fish and veg but not touching the mash potatoe!)

also if children are really hungry hey will eat anything you give them... no child has ever starved themselves to death!

also the children i look after dont get chicken nuggets or other processed rubbish. It is not purchased full stop... we only have in the house proper meat and proper food and use the proper ingradiants to make meals with! do not intend to buy rubbish food for other children!

NannyL · 14/01/2007 17:49

that should say if my charges friends come for dinner and dont 6eat^ its fine...

(not if they come for dinner its fine they go hungry! oppss!)

NannyL, this child cries (yes, really) if you put a plate of say fish and vegetables in front of her. I don't want to make children cry , or make their food issues any worse than they already are! While I would be quite comfortable if someone did this to my children (who wouldn't cry, just go hungry!), I couldn't knowingly do it to my kids' friends.

dont want and dont like are not the same thing.

parents and children get mixed up.

the child would be given what we have for dinner and go home hungry.

oxocube · 14/01/2007 18:04

okay, maybe I'm too soft then. Its just not something I've ever had to deal with with my kids. I should probably leave other kids' food issues/stress to their own parents

Miss fussy (who i referred to in previouse post) cried last time she came round when she saw dinner... cant remember what it was but was something normal.... actually it was pudding she cried about if i remember correctly

once calmly asked to stop crying she stopped... (really NOTHING to cry about) and had to wait until everyone else had finished just as my charges do!

wurlywurly · 15/01/2007 10:54

NannyL gonna send my ds1 to your house for a month then he only eats sausages and fish fingers.

NannyL · 15/01/2007 17:16

wurly wurly... i started my current job in september... my 3 year old then only ate sauages / fish fingers /chips / mash potatoe / plain pasta / ham / cheese and 'normal fruit and veg' (carrots / peas / sweetcorn / apple / banana / broccoli and green beans i think

he now (and since about November) eats literally anything

including pasta with all sorts of sauces, stew / casserole/ lasagne / cottage pie / fish / salmon steaks / fish pie, + now pretty much every veg... including sprouts / parsnips / sweet potatoe /mange tout / swede /sprouts

gonna try him on celeriac this week

NannyL · 16/01/2007 22:00

result.... 3 year old loves celariac mash

well he ate the lot today!
