I give our 10 month old mashed up family meals. Is this wrong?

I cook all our meals as dd2 has dairy allergy and have always mushed up the stews/ fish pies etc for 10 month old ds who loves his dinners.

Never really considered that the stock cubes should be salt free and the vegetables unsalted.

I dont use much salt but is the small amounts he is getting still really bad for him then?

oh actually thats a good point, at 10 months I wouldn't mash. maybe cut, if I was feeling most generous. but am possibly mean/neglectful...

If I'm using stock for meals for dh ds and myself I use the low salt Marigold powder but still halve the amount of powder per litre as even the low salt is quite high.

Sorry, hell of a day, Fatherinlaw died this morning suddenly. But sitting here talking about babyfood now everyone is asleep is like escaping to another world temporarily.

To mash or not mash? Ds at 10 months, has 8 front teeth, 2 fangs coming thru (and saw yesterday the first big molars!) I have freaky baby like in that advert!!
But the problem is when you have all those front teeth you bite off more than you can chew, literally!

Schneebly, i love those beans they taste much nicer anyway dont they!

So I had better watch the salt intake and buy the reduced salt stock. Thanks for your very valuable opinions .

I just stopped adding salt at all while cooking when my dc were at the weaning stage.I buy lo salt or salt free stock cubes, or just use a splash of wine and some extra herbs or whatever instead. We had salt on the table for adults to add if they wanted to. Then the children could have whatever they fancied without me having to think if it was OK for them or not. It's amazing how quickly we got used to it and also how incredibly salty other people's cooking and pre prepared food started to taste to us. There is nothing - as far as I know - that actually needs added salt to cook properly except bread and when I make bread I always halve the salt in the recipe and it still works fine.

mashed up 'adult' food (personally i have a HUGE objection calling food adult or child food, food is food IMO) is perfectly fine... so long as you arnt adding too much salt..

yes be aware of stock but a little bit isnt going to hurt a 10 month old.

also by feeding him 'proper' (thats how i distinguish foood... 'proper' food and 'processed crap' are my general terms ) then you are much more likey to get a child who eats well and eats most things you want him to eat... which is in the long run much more convieniant for you and much healthier for him (so long as you eat healthily in the 1st place which it sound like you do )

By 12 months they should be having just chooped / mashed / cut up 'nirmal' food anyway!

well done, go for it!

Sorry about you FIL, Mrs Noah - hope MN escape therapy is working
Not sure if this has been mentioned elsewhere, but Marigold do a lowsalt veg boullion available in lots of supermarkets we use it half strength - like you, dd (10 mths) has whatever we have - sure she probably still ends up with a bit too much salt, but reckon the positive advantage of eating family meals has got to be a good thing?!?
(we don't do veg in salt - honest, you won't notice...)
