Alcohol-free, but grown-up trifle?

A friend very kindly gave me a trifle bowl for my birthday. Now she, her children and another family are coming for lunch and I would very much like to serve trifle.

I love trifle, but I always think that the booze-soaked sponge is one of the best bits. I've had a look for recipes that are child-friendly, but is seems to me that these will all end up too sweet and lack the edge that alcohol brings.

Please, does anyone have any good ideas for what I could use instead? The six children are all 4 or under so I don't think the parents would appreciate it if I served up an alcoholic pudding and I can't face making two puddings!

Thanks very much.

I make one with a lemon drizzle base which is a Nigella Lawson recipie. It's delicious topped with berries and cream.

I make a mango and lime chiffon trifle - it's so good and we have it at Christmas.

These sound lovely - thank you! Do you have recipes please or do you just make them up? I've got most of the Nigella books.

I've actually never made trifle (never had the right dish before...), but I love it so much I don't want to get it wrong!

I hate trifle
But a woman on Masterchef made one last night that made Marcus Wareing dribble with joy. Think it had pear fruit, ginger sponge, almonds and pistachios on top. Will still be on iPlayer though obviously no recipe as such.

This is the recipe I use.

Nigella's chocolate cherry trifle is really good. If you buy cherries in syrup you can use that to soak the sponges.

Jelly in the bottom. Layer of macarons. Chantilly cream.

i can't bear traditional trifle because I hate booze in puddings (and soggy sponge isn't much better) but I have made this in a trifle dish a few times and it has gone down very well. Not layered though.
