I had a quick look on the net and was confused. I know you are meant to delay nuts till children are older, is it 3 for say peanut butter and 5 for whole nuts, I know I read it somewhere. But pine nuts are not actual nuts so are they ok? They are in a recipe I'm cooking and also in pesto which I thought my son may like although it may be a bit salty. There are no nut allergies in my family but I do have dust allergeries, hayfever etc.

I would think they would be okay. I'm sure in the states they eat loads of peanutbutter and have no morea allergies then we do. We'ere careful as have nut allergies in the family but only with peanuts.

I think part of avoiding nuts is because they can be choked on.

Yes I would grind them up or at least pummel them in pestle and mortar as they are a bit choky

i thought salt was more dangerous - remember reading a couple of years ago that a baby died from eating weetabix which has lots of salt in it (though they may have reduced it now or produce a salt free version). i give my 12 month old pesto just add the salt on to yours seperately.

thanks, yes I remember reading there was a different recommended age for whole and finely chopped ones. I think the Miriam Stoppard baby book that I was bought recommends peanut butuer very early and its been newly reprinted too. Not like another baby book that I was leant that goes on about putting babies to sleep on their front so they don't choke on sick! Its a 15 ywear old one!!

thanks everyone, I'll give it a go. The recipe isn't salty I just thought that bought pesto maybe (not that I've ever made my own).

Yes I remember a baby dying with salt, they had given it bisto and instant mash as it was very smooth and cheaper than baby food. I asked an hv about salt and she said that baked beans were very high and she couldn't remember what it was but I should check if the salt contents were lower than that I should be ok!

I am am bit of ananchovy addict but I'll hold off on that for while

Probably a little late - but my friend saw this thread and was horrified!!

Her DS has a nut allergy, and it pretty much rules his life... Pine nuts are NUTS and all nuts (she says) should be avoided until children are 5 yrs old, as it takes this long for their immune systems to mature fully. This is more important as you yourself have allergies even if they are only hayfever etc. My friend is very hot on research etc, so this is not just her opinion.

Even I thought it was only peanuts you were supposed to avoid, but her Ds is more allergic to cashew, and hazelnuts than peanuts.

Hope that helps!!

Secur - I'm a little hazy on this subject I was only passing on what my friend said. I think the important thing is that it would be safer to avoid them, as I will be doing from now on!!

SoupDragon · 28/05/2004 15:31

Peanuts aren't nuts either though - they're a legume I think.

smellymelly · 28/05/2004 15:37

Whatever!!

after reading this I go straight into crap monther pile
dd adores peanut butter aged 19 mths, loves pesto, ds aged 10 hates nuts though...
Bugger....
no hint of allergies in our family and dietician gave it all clear too!

jane313 · 01/06/2004 20:46

oops I gave him some. Oh well maybe I'll believe this week that its not early exposure to nuts that caused allergies but our immune systems finding something to fight. Shall I give him the frozen portion as well, hmmm
