Instant Porridge Recipe for Toddlers

My LO loves porridge in the morning, but it takes so long to cook the slow version. All of the instant porridge a on the market seem to be loaded with sugar, but I can't seem to find any recipes for homemade instant porridge online. There are a lot of recipes for overnight oats, but this is served cold. I am guessing that if I mill normal oats in the blender and add dehydrated milk, this is probably a start. Does anyone know a good recipe?

Instant - Readybrek, powdered milk and boiling water. Won't taste like the real thing though

TeaBelle · 17/03/2016 14:34

I add boiling water from the kettle to a bowl of oats. Leave for 3 minutes to soak in and add a splash of milk or yoghurt and then whatever flavourings you want (apple sauce, raisins and cinnamon)

LollieB · 17/03/2016 15:51

Thanks, I wasn't aware I could just add the water to normal oats. I'll give it a go with the yoghurt too.

Proper camping? The last place I went to had a microwave for sterilizing bottles I think but it wasn't exactly hard core back to basics camping.

Oats and milk in pan at night. In fridge. On job in morning on super low 5 mins . Doesn't even need mixing if on low

Wigeon · 17/03/2016 21:06

Ready Brek plus hot milk is instant - that's the point!

LollieB · 18/03/2016 05:30

Wigeon, the whole point of this post was to ask for recipes that are healthy. If I wanted to feed my child sugar-laden Ready Brek, I am more than aware that it exists!

There no added sugar in Ready Brek! Or you can buy the cheaper supermarket own brand Instant Hot Oats. This also has no added sugar. Ingredients: Oats, Oat flour, vitamins and iron.

Ready Brek really has an image problem on mumsnet as loads of people think it's sugary. Maybe in the 80s it was.

fruitpastille · 18/03/2016 05:44

It's still nicer if you cook it for a couple of minutes though. For camping I give oatibix. Much easier!

BikeRunSki · 18/03/2016 05:48

No sugar in Ready Brek. When my DC were babies (youngest is only 4), there wasn't even any salt in Tesco's version.

I soak oats in water in a non stick pan over night. Cook for 2 mins on the hob in the morning. Doesn't need a lot of stirring. Soak empty pan in cold water. Porridge skin lifts off. Also possible whilst camping.

dementedpixie · 18/03/2016 08:57

There is absolute NO added salt or sugar in original ready brek and hasn't ever been as far as I am aware

SweetPeaPods · 18/03/2016 09:08

No sugar in our box of readybrek

Bunbaker · 18/03/2016 09:30

What kind of oats are you using that take so long to cook? Normal porridge oats only take about 5 minutes on the hob. IMO porridge should be eaten as soon as it is made. It goes horribly gluey when left and I think freezing it in batches wouldn't work.

You can soak oats overnight and then heat them in the morning, but it will only save you a couple of minutes.

I don't understand your husband's aversion to microwave ovens. They are perfectly safe. I also don't understand the snobbery associated with microwaves. I very rarely use mine to heat ready meals, but use it for making porridge, melting butter or chocolate for baking, reheating hot drinks that have cooled, toasting nuts and seeds (yes you can), making hot milky drinks, heating up wheat bags for easing aching muscles, and a plethora of other uses.

Incidentally, any kind of porridge sticks like glue if you don't soak the pan or dish.

The original version of Quaker Oat So Simple has no sugar added. It recommends microwave cooking times but I'm sure you could do it on the hob:

Aldi ready brek has no sugar or salt either

PoppyAmex · 18/03/2016 15:16

We all have overnight porridge here.

Pinhead oats (NOT rolled oats), ration of 3 to 1 with water and salt (or milk, if you prefer) in a mug. Stick in slow cooker with some water on the bottom overnight.

It's like eating pudding in the morning... super creamy and lovely.

Wigeon · 18/03/2016 19:01

Sainsburys own brand of Ready Brek (see my link above) has the following ingredients:

Wholegrain Rolled Oats (60%), Wholegrain Oat Flour (38%), Calcium Carbonate, Niacin, Iron, Vitamin B2 (Riboflavin), Vitamin B6, Vitamin B1 (Thiamin), Folic Acid, Vitamin D, Vitamin B12.

No sugar at all! If you buy the fancy stuff with flavours, that probably has sugar in it, but plain old ready Brek / own brand equivalents has no sugar and no sweeteners.

tabulahrasa · 18/03/2016 19:12

"Wholegrain Rolled Oats (60%), Wholegrain Oat Flour (38%), Calcium Carbonate, Niacin, Iron, Vitamin B2 (Riboflavin), Vitamin B6, Vitamin B1 (Thiamin), Folic Acid, Vitamin D, Vitamin B12."

Same ingredients as actual readybrek...

It's all yon flavoured stuff that has added sugar and what have you in it

jobrum · 18/03/2016 19:34

I use Ready Brek and was also surprised to find out it had no sugar or salt. Its super easy to make , especially as I caanot get the hang of making it in a microwave.

My dm used to make porridge in the slowcooker overnight. In the morning it was lovely and creamy. And ready when we were

regenerationfez · 18/03/2016 22:12

Ready Brek is just oats, like normal oats. It has never had sugar in it, unless you buy the chocolate or flavoured ones. . The issue I have is that because it's so finely milled, it doesn't keep my DS full for as long as normal rolled oats. But it's the healthiest of all the cereals.
