Does anyone know if it's possible to DIY dairy free yogurt.

I usually buy alpro but would love to make the kids their own. with a bit less sugar.

what recipes/methods do you use?

and what does it taste like

I make mine with milk and a starter yogurt. and a little bit of milk powder using the Lakeland machine. its very easy, no added sugar and not bitter.....but its made of milk so doesn't fit your spec

i think the issue with non dairy is that the yoghurt bacteria need lactose to work on to make the milk into yoghurt, so a true non dairy yoghurt is basically impossible

but having said that I was reading the other day about coconut milk yoghurt, but there was faffing with gelatine (or veggie equiv) to thicken

I'll have a rummage through my history and see if I can find it.

Here's the link

lots of comments say it's runny without the gelling agent, she seems to gloss over that though imo!

Water kaffir might work?

wow that's certainly one to try. don't have a yogurt maker maybe an airing cupboard might work

Some ideas on this website might help go dairy free. I'm sure Rose Elliot had a recipe in one of her books for making dairy free yogurt which used the culture from live authenticity to start it off but then continued with culture from the soya or whatever yogurt for subsequent batches. I used to have a yogurt maker but found a thermos flask worked better and made bigger batches :)

that sounds fab...i might do some coconut yog later....but with milk and cocnut milk.

Are you using the canned stuff or the milk replacement stuff??

itsonlysubterfuge · 19/03/2016 10:13

Here is a recipe I saw for Coconut Yogurt, and it's raw vegan. Might be a bit too much faffing though.

I made coconut milk yoghurt. To be honest it took an age and I wasn't hugely keen on the result. If you have to avoid dairy it's probably worthwhile otherwise homemade natural yoghurt is delicious!
