Full roast beef with trimmings dinner - what can I provide in lieu of the beef for a pescatarian?

It's a special occasion meal and I've been looking for a vegetarian substitute as I can't think of a fish that'd go well with Yorkshire puddings and the rest. But most seem to involve mushrooms and the person (that'd be my eldest) I'm trying to cater for doesn't like mushrooms!!

(Though I do know that is they aren't notable mushrooms them they have been eaten!!)

Cauliflower or broccoli cheese with a breadcrumb crust?
Puff pastry wrapped leek & cheese?
& apricot stuffing?
Blue cheese and walnut tartlet?
Might get away with Salmon as long as there is a parsley sauce or similar not gravy Grin

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 09/03/2016 16:29

Salmon en croute. Easy peasy using readymade puff pastry and sufficiently special.

stealthbanana · 09/03/2016 16:30

Can you do a fish pie?

Otherwise I'd probably just do baked salmon.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 09/03/2016 16:31

You could do a creamed horseradish sauce which would go with both the beef and the salmon.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeG0es · 09/03/2016 16:33

Salmon en croute sounds good. Cheesy dishes don't go well with roast dinners IMO.

MakingJudySmile · 09/03/2016 16:45

Oh yes I should say also doesn't like salmon. Sorry should have said - didn't because I'd written off having a fish replacement!!

This is one of my favourites to have with a vegetarian roast dinner

dodobookends · 09/03/2016 16:48

Perhaps you could ask the person what they would like to have (unless of course it is a surprise party for them!).

whois · 09/03/2016 16:50

Oh I like a nice pasty and cheese thing with a roast - think it goes quite well.

MakingJudySmile · 09/03/2016 17:00

I have asked, but he's 12 and says 'I don't mind'!!

That looks nice fuzzy.

The hairy bikers have a lovely nut roast recipie too. I know nut roast is usually seen as bland and boring, but these ones even the meat eaters will eat Wink

stealthbanana · 09/03/2016 17:22

Maybe some sort of spinach pasty? Or some grilled halloumi?

Penfold007 · 09/03/2016 17:47

What about pan roasting a small but chunky piece of cod and serving it with the roasties and veg?

tkband3 · 09/03/2016 19:14

Whenever I'm doing a big roast for guests that includes a vegetarian, I'm afraid I take the line of least resistance and buy a Higgedy Pie, which I serve with vegetarian gravy. All the accompaniments - cauliflower cheese, veg, roast potatoes, parsnips are veggie, so they don't go hungry.

hooliodancer · 09/03/2016 19:17

Delia's parsnip roulade, from her Christmas book and on her website.

It's gorgeous!

blahblueblah · 09/03/2016 19:28

Salmon en croute

MakingJudySmile · 09/03/2016 19:52

Never heard of Higgedy Pie. I'll have to look out for it.

Shall check out the Hairy Biker's nut roast and Delia's parsnip roulade.

I think I've pretty much decided fish is 'wrong' with Yorkshire puddings and roast potatoes. I could be missing a trick though!!

Higgedy is a brand OP. Great pies, in the chiller cabinet of the supermarket

IHaveBrilloHair · 09/03/2016 20:23

Chestnut suet pudding

tkband3 · 10/03/2016 09:00

Sorry yes, Higgedy Pies are a brand - really yummy pies in all sorts of flavours (with and without mushrooms Smile).

cdtaylornats · 10/03/2016 21:48

Tuna steak or if you can find it shark. Roast Monkfish.

MrsPnut · 10/03/2016 21:53

DH is a vegetarian and he likes the Linda McCartney Cheese and leek slices with sunday lunch or if he is very lucky and can find them, the vegetarian sausage and red onion plait.

Both go well with gravy and trimmings.

This is a divine recipe...follow the recipe to the tee for the herb crust...serve with roasties, veg and maybe a lemon butter sauce.

I use hake... it gets rave reviews.
