Desperate! 6 month old screaming whilst eating solids! Why? (bit long - sorry)

I have a 6 month old who's an extremely content and happy child but for some reason has started screaming whilst eating her solids at dinner time! She starts off really well, eating merrily and then about half way through starts screaming uncontrollably! She arches her back in her high chair and is extremely distressed! I then pick her up to comfort her - which can take a few minutes and dinner's forgotten!

She is getting her first tooth so could this be what's upsetting her? Also, she starts getting ratchety when I take her bib out of her mouth whilst trying to feed her - could that be what's frustrating her??

Please any advise would be much appreciated as I'm feeling pretty low about these screaming sessions!

Thx Esbee - am really feeling at such a loss tonight! It's amazing how such a thing can upset one!

Poor thing. it could be teething, although when my daughter did something similar (she's 14 months now) she developed a thick snotty cold a few days later. I assumed it was a sore throat, but maybe her ears were hurting too much to swallow, too. If she's only 6 months I wouldn't worry too much about how much solids she is getting but keep giving her lots of liquid (whether she's teething or getting a cold).

I think it sounds like she's teething, my 2 never eat much when there is a tooth on the way. my dd has just turned 7 mths and is getting her 3 and 4 teeth...she makes a fuss at every meal time(unless its very watery baby rice).

she also loves gnawing and sucking on rusks..very messy buts keeps her quiet while we're eating

as soon as the tooth comes through their appetite usually returns!

another quick thought...might it be trapped wind, this can sometimes happen half way through a meal. You could try winding her, then continuing with meal?

Poor you (and your ds!) I used to give some solids, then half way thru give some milk, then more solids, then finish up the milk....

Is it only at dinner time?

Duh, sorry, meant dd, not ds!

hi blush, my fat porker of a DS2 has suddenly started doing this - and started teething too. I'm sure they are connected, I am just giving him his milk first instead, then very sloppy solids, either homemade veg mush or those powdered ones made very runny

Sounds really distressing, poor blush03 and blushette! My ds (nearly 5 months) screams sometimes when he has decided he wants a particular food (usually stewed pear) and I give him something else. Doesn't sound like this is it in your case though...

Hello Blush, my little man has started teething to and he does the same when I'm feeding him. He's a little guzzle guts, but has recently taken to bellowing when he's had enough and I'm sure its connected to his teeth. I just stop giving him his lunch, and give him some finger food instead and he's quite happy gumming down on that.

thx for all your support and suggestions. Everytime you think you've cracked it you get thrown another curve ball. I just love her to bits and feel so helpless when she's so distressed.

Anyway, it's a start of a new day and we'll see how dinner time goes. Am going to start with her milk first and then try some sloppy solids (doesn't sound appealing but am sure she will just love it)

Will let you all know later!(hold thumbs)
