I need to get healthy and stop feeding my DC and me crap all the time!
I'm not a confident cook and where meat is concerned I worry that I won't cook it properly and we will all be ill!

So I need tips, advice, very easy recipes or recommendations for good easy cookbooks please.
TIA and Happy New Year!

QuootiepieTheHogmanayAss · 01/01/2007 13:20

When you search recipes, you can search under healthy etc.

MKG · 01/01/2007 13:23

Tortoise,

Do you have a slow cooker? I find that i can make lots of healthy meals in mine. It's great just put all the ingredients in and turn it on. There are great slow cooker recipes out there.

AitchTwoOhOhSeven · 01/01/2007 13:25

agree with quootie, the internet is a godsend. sometimes i just type in the contents of my cupboards and the words 'recipe' and 'delia' or 'bbc'. good luck.

I'd love to be able to cook homemade healthy meals too, but the child I look after , after school is SO FUSSY I always have to do something else for him.( He doesn't eat pasta, rice, pizza and only poatoes and peas whilst making faces etc) And my 2 don't eat mince so I can't do lasagne for them or shepards pie etc. ( I do however do lasagne for me and dh and shepards pie for the cm child) . And ds doesn't really like wet things like casseroles. He would eat a chicken one I suppose....

I think I'm going to have to stick to cooking individual dinners

I'm going to look at this thread though to see what suggestions you get.

You know what I think would be great - have you ever seen Honey we're killing the kids? The recipe book they give the families wouldbe really good to have.

tortoise · 01/01/2007 13:27

I have a small slow cooker.Holds 1.5 litre capacity (so the book says!)My Mum gave it me when she moved away.
Only ever used it for cooking ham/gammon joint.

2 out of 4 of mine are fussy! The other 2 are willing to try new things. Ive decided they will all have to try out new meals!

That would be good wallace!

Ive got the 2nd dinner lady book but only tried one recipe and no-one liked it except me!

I'll try to find a slow cooker link for you, I make about 3 meals a week in it. It is a godsend on busy days.

tortoise · 01/01/2007 13:31

that is a great idea ! i;ll join you! have got very lazy with cooking lately, and am resolving to cook fresh food , with fresh ingredients , a lot more often ! so need simple , quick recipes!

DH taken DS bowling, so was going to make pasta ! again! for me and DD, then decided, no, will actually look in the fridge and make a something else !

we are having courgette frittata, finished under the grill with some grated cheese !

PeachesMcLean · 01/01/2007 13:38

MKG - sorry to crash the thread a bit - I had a go with a slow cooker recently but a lot of the recipes seemed to say prepare everything as normal in a pan (ie, you've got to soften the onions, brown the meat) etc THEN put it in the cooker. I can't imagine doing this before work at 8am when we're all rushing round like idiots - or is that when you do it? Or does the "chuck it all in and pour on boiling water" method really work out fine? What's your routine for getting three meals a week out of it? (Or maybe you're just Organised...?)

HarkTheAEROdAngelsSing · 01/01/2007 13:43

recipes Think that's the link you want.

HarkTheAEROdAngelsSing · 01/01/2007 13:44

No sorry - link doesn't work for me. Is the address correct?

largeginandtonic · 01/01/2007 13:45

largeginandtonic · 01/01/2007 13:52

Time to start an 'am in labour' thread soon i think!!!

jabberwocky · 01/01/2007 13:52

Ds1 is such a picky eater that it has seriously affected my cooking! I have ordered this book:

The Big Book of Recipes for Babies, Toddlers, and Children: 365 Quick, Easy, and Healthy Dishes

hoping it will breathe new life into my kitchen. The recipes are supposed to be adult-friendly as well

lulumama · 01/01/2007 13:54

i think so, lg&t..need a bit of excitment! glad you are ok x

Wallace · 01/01/2007 13:58

They do have the recipes from Honey we're killing the kids but for some reason they don't look as simple or tasty as they do on the show
