I need meals for 5 adults and J, 3 men (DH BIL FIL) me and MIL they're coming for 10 days. (will be hard - but I did offer and it won't be for long! lol - she says) anyhow last time they gave us £40 - which I don't like taking at all, and not expecting, we can have food of £200 for the month but no more. ie £50 p/w is it possible to feed us all on that? - can reduce DH and my weeks to £35 if I really stretch it out. and use the other for them going down.

what can I do that's cheap filling and looks more than it is iycwim.

BIL seems to eat loads thou, esp snacky foods like crisps and buscuits etc (will be making the fork buscuits) they don't really have brekkie - but I do porrige anyways, not always lunch, but cheese will do - althou not for 10 days mostly it's just dinners

lol. ooh I lvoe atich's site it's fab, thanks. we tried J with a stirfry last night (dry one no sauce) he wasn't too sure what to make of it - actually stir fry would be a cheap one to do I guess if I can get the chicken cheap enough.

Guess what.... Lidl sell fresh chicken

MamaG · 31/12/2006 11:37

Twiglett's muffin recipe

All good ideas so far, wish I had a Lidl near me

winestein · 31/12/2006 11:52

PMSL at "only 20 minutes til I burn my tongue"

My local Lidl is about 5 miles away but is well worth the trip every now and then. I am a total Lidl convert. I also like Farmfoods for their Fox and Goose Pub Special salmon and brocolli fishcakes for those days when I truly can not be arsed, but don't tell anyone....

i've been meaning to go there shosah cos the lidl's close by isn't it? (what day is the meat man? i'd be looking at a fri avo or a sat am) so DH can come as well. that's all of that sorted then - althou normally in our butchers I spend £35-£40 for us for a month - is it reasonable to spend the extra £25 for another 3 people? - I guess so as they're adults?

do you know if that lidl is a big one? i've got a tonne of tesco's bags to reuse - as DH is snobby with lidl bags.

pad everything out with lots of veg.

Baked potatoes and salad.

Risotto top idea - v filling.

Stir fries also cheap - get a big bag of beansprouts and shred as many veg as you can, then add a few strips of beef/chicken.

"Ooh, why don't you treat us to a takeaway?" is very cheap.

Or tell them the entire family is doing Lighterlife and they need to bring their own food. For this you will need a stack of biscuits under your bed, though.

Munz · 31/12/2006 12:18

A good, easy and - I think - cheap pudding:

half a pound of digestive biscuits
2oz butter

Bash biscuits until they're crumbs (I put them in a plastic bag and bash with a rolling pin, but you could also do it in a food processor) then add to melted butter. Press into a 7 or 8 inch tin (springform is the best - needs to be at least 2inches deep), then chill for half an hour

Beat together till properly blended half a pound of philadelphia cream cheese (not the light stuff), the juice of a lemon and a tin of condensed milk (not evaporated milk!). Pour onto the chilled biscuit crumb base. Chill for a couple of hours before serving.

Sprinkle with Flake or decorate with bits of fruit or whatever you have to hand.

It's really easy and very yummy, and keeps for a good couple of days.

cal - this si what i'm thinking, DH says not to beother as well - i'll be making my own bread this time the main prob we have is milk and bread (along with snacks) ooh and cereals - which as I say I only buy porrige now as it's cheap and filling, however last visit we were going thru 2 loaves every other day, and 6 pints of milk every 2 days, (which is far too much, esp combined with the tub of cereals eaten) DH did have a moan last time, but it caused friction with PIL. I realise we'll be using up more of the stuff but surely not that much more??

(have also found hovis bread on cheap in the super markets for 50p p/l - date's not long but they're ok in the freezer for emergancies, and if we're eating so much anyways.

yep, have soup as one dinner - well chicken stew/dumplings (will add herbs to see how they pan out next time)

will dig out the list to see what you think so far.
