Hi, im new to mumsnet, and was wondering if anybody else on here is bringing up their baby on a vegan diet. I'm pretty sure I know what i'm doing, but would appreciate some reassurance... x

Hi Amberjade. I've come across a few vegan babies. You have to be quite committed. I presume you know about the Vegan Society. There's great advice and book recommendations there.

There are a few vegan MNers. Franny is or was and Tooticky to name but two.

I warn you though you're likely to be critisised by others who don't understand it so well. Don't let them get to you.

All the best and welcome to MN.

Spider.

I Am bringing the kids up on a vegetarian diet that is very light on the dairy. The kids are 3 years and 13 months. I make sure that they have beans twice a week. dd is quite keen on tofu, uncooked even, trying to convince ds about that he is not so keen!

Are you breastfeeding?

Franny not posting atm - or rarely

I am not a vegan or even a vegetarian but I never gave any of my 3 children meat, dairy or refined sugar before they were 1 year old.
I did breastfeed and I thought that was important. Once they were on to solids I used a lot of avocado, mashed into lots of different things. I made a lentil stew with onions, tomatoes and whatever other veg I had. I made puddings with ground rice (Baby Rice is unnecessary if you bf or give formula and costs 13 x ground rice)fruit and water or b/milk. Once they were eating bread, it was spread with hummous or drizzled with olive oil. It's funny that they would all eat and seem to enjoy things like hummous which they later rejected after discovering butter!
