how can you have a box of trifle? surely a trifle is made of lots of diff layers... i think if you dont know that much you will have trouble putting one together by dawn

MrsBadger · 24/12/2006 18:36

should be fine, it's mostly sugar anyway

fiiiivemadmarchhaaaares · 24/12/2006 18:37

Those things have very long use by dates I imagine, so I would think it would be ok

drummumadrumming · 24/12/2006 18:38

your all mad!

it comes with a jelly you have to make with water...
blamonge you add milk to (ok I can't spell it)
and a cream topping and hundreds and thousands...
and ... it was out of date in August...

If it is, ingredients are

Strawberry Flavour Jelly Crystals:
Sugar, Gelling Agen (Carageenan),
Coulours, (Beetroot Red, Annatto), Adipic Acid, Cream of Tartar, Thickener (Carboxymethyl Cellulose), Flavouring, Sweetner (Sodium Saccharin).
Custard Powder:
Cornflour, Salt, Colour (Annatto), Flavouring.
Trifle Topping Mix
Hydrogenated Vegetable Oil, Sugar, Emulsifiers (Propane-I, 2-diol esters of Fatty Acids, Soya Lecithins), Modified Starch, Whey Powder (from milk), Lactose (from milk), Milk Proteins, Thickener (Carboxymethyl Cellulose),Flavourings, Colour (Beta-Carotene)
Sponge FIngers:
Sugar, Wheat flour, Egg, Glucose Syrup, Raising Agent (Ammonium Hydrogen Carbonate), Flavouring.

Really think it would take years for most of that lot to go off. So I'd use it.

NappiesGalooooooooooooria · 24/12/2006 18:41

well blow me.

who knew?

ok. i say make it and see... (too late to go and buy alternative now anyway...)

MrsBadger · 24/12/2006 18:42

it should be fine, really!

if you're still worried, make a normal jelly and leave it to set, then make normal custard (tinned stuff won't work as it doesn't set) and add a layer of that. Top with whipped cream.
(NB for the record this will be nicer than the Bird's one from a box)

Carmenere · 24/12/2006 18:42

Of course it will be actually edible but it won't be actually nice, by that I mean if I remember them correctly from my childhood visits to my mums friend house they were rank. I wouldn't bother tbh.

drummumadrumming · 24/12/2006 18:42

thank you.....

I'm making a home made cheese cake as well [smug emoticon] and I really wanted something to go with it... a box of trifle was all mother could come up with.. and that was bloody out of date! I'm afraid I haven't got anything to make a proper trifle with.. I'm sure they'll survive...

Thanks everyone... though I'm sure some of you have been on the wine already judging by the earlier responses..
