quick hot breakfasts before school

Hi,

I'm looking for hot filling breakfasts that I can knock up in no more than 15 mins for my 12 year old DS.

He isn't a fan of eggs ( stems from an allergy from birth to 7). He's tried porridge but wasn't keen, but I'm wondering if I could make it tastier with different flavours?

He loves sausages and bacon, however I'm concious of the unhealthiness of that!

He likes beans on toast, but think he's starting to get bored of that every day!

Cereal doesn't fill him up, he eats at 7ish ( bus at 7.30) and if he's just had cereal he's then in the school canteen buying paninis or bagels. Id rather him have a good nutritious breakfast at home!

What do your children have for breakfast?

Any ideas?!

Thanks

My DD is a great porridge fan - despite really not liking milk in any other forms. She will have it plain, but I sometimes let her have sugar. She likes honey on it, or dried apricots in it. DS likes sultanas in his, and occasionally I add apple juice instead of some of the milk/water which he likes.
2-3 mins in the microwave and done.

Sugar free pancakes Smile
I make a huge batch of batter on a Sunday night, freeze it in portions and then defrost a batch the night before I need it. Takes no more than 10 mins to cook them, and you can have any topping imaginable. Blueberries and yoghurt is my favourite Smile

Porridge with Marmite?

Naicecuppatea · 19/01/2016 15:44

Some protein in his breakfast will help to keep him full too, if he is not keen on eggs, then pancakes, or greek yoghurt (with toppings).

Wholefood shop muesli (much solider than supermarket stuff - loads of nuts & seeds) with stewed fruit - I make a big pot then just microwave some in the morning. You can put hot milk on the muesli, too, which is nice.

Mominatrix · 19/01/2016 20:02

bagels with smoked salmon and cream cheese
toast with avocado
Baked apple with muesli and yoghurt
Milky brown rice with berries and seeds - like rice pudding, but with cooked rice heated up with milk

Hot waffles (in the toaster) with yoghurt and fruit.
Porridge, but with peanut butter stirred in and raisins or banana on too.
Breakfast burritos: leftover rice in a wrap with precooked beans and salsa (and scrambled egg if he'd tolerate it in this form), microwaved on high for 1 minute.
Home fries: leftover boiled potatoes chopped up and sauteed with onion (use the prechopped frozen ones to save time). Season well and eat with ketchup or chilli sauce.
Any ordinary cereal but with hot milk (seems to "stick" more, somehow).

I used to make them a cheese and ham panini (panino?) and wrap it in foil, so it was still hot by they time they got to school.

Mummyoftwo91 · 20/01/2016 10:24

Apart from what's already been suggested mine like muffins both savoury and sweet I freeze batches to save time, those ready made pastry crossiants that cook fresh in the oven, nice stuffed with cheese and ham, I also make homemade granola/cereal bars which are way healthier than the type you can buy the shop

hazeyjane · 20/01/2016 10:29

I make the fat American style pancakes - wrap them up and keep them in the fridge, then microwave a couple in the morning served with yoghurt/fruit/syrup etc.

toffeeboffin · 28/01/2016 02:19

How about banana bread? Make a bath at weekends, it's lovely toasted and spread with butter and mashed banana. Could have a slice of cheese on the side and some warm milk?

Destinysdaughter · 28/01/2016 02:30

Chopped tinned tomatoes ( heated in microwave ) on toast, put cheese on top and grill for a few mins. Yummy!

catsofa · 28/01/2016 02:30

Hummous on toast
Princes mackerel in spicy tomato sauce on toast
Peanut butter on toast
Tomato puree and avocado on toast
Cheese on toast
Tuna sweetcorn mayo on toast
Sorry bit of a theme here. ...Grin

Porridge with Nutella stirred in and chopped banana or mashed up banana and frozen blueberries (that one is better on the hob) with some honey or maple syrup if you like.

MissBattleaxe · 28/01/2016 09:21

I make a huge batch of rice pudding in the slow cooker (best ever way) and decant warmed up batches through the week (keep it in the fridge).

eckythumpenallthat · 28/01/2016 09:27

We are fans of porridge in this house. I know you said he is t keen but these are 'flavours' we like

Strawberries and cream - oats, milk, mushed up strawberries and some freshly sliced on top
Apple cinnamon - Apple purée and cinnamon (I cheat and have a couple of Apple purée pouches from aldi to save time)
Banana and cinnamon
Blueberry and cinnamon
Almond crunch - oats, milk, blob of almond butter and chopped almonds on top

Would he try smoked mackerel? I was surprised DD would entertain a black pepper one

Tbh if there was a good amount of protein in it I wouldn't be adverse to previous nights tea leftovers as a lot smaller portion for breakfast

CakeUpWall · 28/01/2016 10:09

DD (13) will currently only eat noodles for breakfast. Fine egg noodles, boil for 3.5 minutes, drain and stir in 1 tsp each of soy sauce and honey. While the noodles are cooking I make her a big banana/milk smoothie to drink with it.

She has this before 7 am and it seems to keep her going until stupidly late school lunch at 2 pm.

Destinysdaughter · 28/01/2016 16:26

Please how do you make rice pudding in the slow cooker? I want some! Smile

MissBattleaxe · 28/01/2016 16:38

Slow Cooker rice pudding

2 or 3 oz pudding rice
4 pints milk
couple of tablespoons sugar
large knob of butter.

Chuck it all in for about 6 or 7 hours with an occasional stir. It's not exactly diet food, but it fills my son up. It is so thick and creamy, the best I've ever made (preen). I keep it in the fridge and warm a bowl full up before school.

Destinysdaughter · 28/01/2016 19:07

MissB thanks for that, sounds yummy! I notice you don't put any nutmeg in it?

MissBattleaxe · 28/01/2016 19:09

You can do, I sometimes cinnamon.

PurpleThermalsNowItsWinter · 28/01/2016 19:23

Toasted bagel with varied toppings?
A panini to eat on his way to the bus stop?
Have you tried vegetarian bacon and/or sausages for everyday? They're healthier and the Morningstar bacon used to taste the same.

MrsJorahMormont · 05/02/2016 10:21

Some yummy ideas here!
