I would like try making fruit smoothies in an attempt to get my kids eat more fruit. But I am averse to cluttering up my kitchen with more gadgets - can I just make them in the food processor? Any easy ones to start with ? Preferably using fruit I might have in the house eg nothing too exotic

If you use soft fruit and you don't mind peeling/preparing it first, you can use a blender or hand blender. Eg bananas, strawberries, raspberries, pears, peaches, blueberries - any combo of those is lovely. You can also addd yoghurt. Yummmm!

Thanks Snowleopard. Do I use fruit juice and ice as well? If I can use the food processor, whats the point of a smoothie machine?

sorry if i am being dense here......

Um I don't know much about smoothie machines, but a proper juicer can get the skin off and juice really hard things like carrots. You can add fruit juice to make a smoothie runnier - or to add to the fruit count. Haven't tried blending ice, I'd be worried about the blades.

buy a magic bullet from woolworths! i have been coveting one off sky shopping for months but they were too pricey and as i am a sucker for infomercials i thought probably too good to be true! it blends, juices, chops ice etc. have only had it a week but it is great!!! it was £39.99.
it comes with a small recipe book too with some ideas for smoothies. also, the base is only the size of a large coffee mug so will not lie like a huge unsused lump like the big proper juicer i bought 6 mths ago and have barely used! (the juicer is great btw but a real pita to clean)
oops, sorry getting too gabby in my excitement!

oh thanks silverbells! is the magic bullet hard to clean? Does it have one these little spouts that get clogged with bits of fruit?

Can you tell I am such a lazy housewife????

I use my food processor for them. Works a treat. But I also cheat and use frozen fruit for them, b/c then I don't need to add ice.

If I do use canned fruit, I add ice.

Just yoghurt (or ice cream), a bit of honey, juice (can use the fruit juice from the can if using canned), fruit and go.

A splash of coconut extract goes down a treat, too.

like the sound of those recipes expat!
the magic bullet has a cup and blade that you just remove and wash, but unlike a bigger food processor/jug blender there aren't loads of nooks and crannies to clog.
don't know how to do links but you cld cut and paste this -
