Just a quickie! Can I cook this receipe in advance. I am doing it on Xmas Day for first time, but would like to do it in advance and possible serve it cold? Is this possible.

Many thanks

absolutely! I much prefer it cold!

I'd cook it on Christmas Eve, leave it to stand in the liquid for a while until quite cool, it keeps it nce and moist, then chill until you want to eat - at least that's what I'm doing this year!

oh and despite what Nigella says I always put my ham in cold water, bring to the boil and then get rid of the water to start again. Just in case it is a salty one!!

Thanks Lucycat. Enjoy yourself and your ham this xmas!

I was wondering the same thing! If I do it on Christmas Eve will it be ok until Boxing Day? And do you bother with baking it in the oven, or just boil it then serve it?

I think the baking bit is crucial as you add a glaze, which looks v festive and tastes good as well

Lucycat · 17/12/2006 20:15

I don't bother with the baking bit as I find it a bit sweet, but if you like it like that then great.

A couple of days should be fine, ours never lasts that long as dh keeps nicking it out of the fridge!

I've found Nigella's site and her recipe page on it says that sometimes she doesn't bother.

here

I think I'll see how much time there is left for glazing on Christmas Eve

Thanks for the advice.

I'm doing one on xmaseve as that is the sum total of my christmas entertaining

I am doing nothing this year, bar a meal for dh and I xmas eve (ham, cheese, bread champagne) breakfast (scrambled eggs, smoked salmon, bagels, champagne) supper (more ham/bread cheese, champagne)

Actually there is a theme Champagne with everything

Boxing day we are driving back to Dh's digs in tewkesbury for panto and from then on it is pub food or tesco metro

Will be thinking of all the fellow Nigellas busy with their hams on Xmas Eve then.

Me thinks I may incorporate the Champagne aspect into it too, orally of course!!!!
