I usually buy.... cakes and biscuits?

Seriously though, I ususally buy party rings - very popular, but maybe banned by the MN food police? Not sure.

I tell you what is delicious - marshmallows - dipped in melted choc then in either choc sprinkles or hundreds and thousands.

Also we often have jelly and ice cream.

FairyTaleOfNewYork · 15/12/2006 10:00

party rings are fine, i think they contain natural food colourings.

hatwoman · 15/12/2006 10:01

yes they're coloured with beetroot - they're virtually a vegetable.

hatwoman · 15/12/2006 10:02

and the sticky bit in teh middle mean that jammy dodgers count as a portion of fruit

admylin · 15/12/2006 10:14

One thing that impressed the kids most at one of our parties was fruit kebabs - takes a bit of time but healthy and if you dipped one end in melted chocolate it would be like a sweet treat.
A large bowl of freshly made popcorn also went down well.

We don't do loads of cakes and biscuits.
I make fairy cakes and the birthday cake.

We have jelly and ice cream instead which always goes down a storm - hardly anyone has it at parties these days. We have bowls of sprinkles so they can decorate it and then eat.

I buy those little cardboard jelly bowls from Sainbos and make lots of individual jellies the night beore.

DINOsaurmummykissingsantaclaus · 15/12/2006 10:33

The only drawback about party rings is that they are not vegetarian - I think they have gelatine in - so no good if you need to do halal food, which we always do.

EniDeepMidwinter · 15/12/2006 10:35

puddle does the icecream go on top?

OP posts:
puddle · 15/12/2006 10:38

yes - on top, choc sprinkles and 100 and 1000s in little bowls on the tables.

Or the other thing which went down well was when we bought cornets and flakes and made 99s with strawberry sauce on top.

steffy1 · 15/12/2006 10:42

iced gems-normally on offer in iceland!

i buy them mostly for me though.....

elclose · 15/12/2006 13:48

recently i did ice-cream with loads for them to sprinkle on top all in little bowls ,so sauce, flakes, wafers, jelly tots, smarties, marshmallows stuff like that just gave each child one scoop and let them do the restwent down a treat.
Also did fruit platter.

We went to toddler group party yesterady and the woman had done it by going to tescos half an hour before hand. Was great! Boxes or raisins, bought plain cakes which she put icing and sweets on top, jaffa cakes and grapes. That was the sweet stuff - it was fine - kids loved it.

JollyOldSaintNikkielas · 15/12/2006 20:21

We do jelly and ice cream!
Have to have party rings and choc fingers (cheap in home bargains)and fairy cakes
Fruit kebabs or even just grapes for th ehealthy

PrincessPeaHead · 15/12/2006 20:24

one HAS to have mini rolls.
party rings are very popular.
then pombears or hulahoops
and sandwiches
and mini sausages drizzled with maple syrup and then cooked.

that will do!

PrincessPeaHead · 15/12/2006 20:25

you see no one ever eats jelly at our parties

so I've given up on it.

I think icecream and self-service sprinkles, choc sauce etc would be any small child's idea of heaven

SueW · 15/12/2006 21:48

DD's party this weekend:

Sainsburys cornflake cakes and bitesize flapjacks (special offer)
choc finger biscuits
hula hoops
mini pringles
sandwiches
mini sausages
satsumas
tiny toms

She also wants pizza but I think it will be too much

poinsettydog · 15/12/2006 22:02

I make top hats 'cause they are so easy and kids love 'em. Sweet case, blob melted chocolate in bottom, stick in a marhsmallow, smartie stuck to top with blob chocolate.

If I was buying sweet stuff, I wouldn't get more spongey stuff due to birthday cake. Crispie cakes. And that'd probably be it as I put sweets in teh party bags yes, I do.

Boleyn · 16/12/2006 20:35

mini jaffa cakes and Tesco mini doughnuts (99p)
