Can anyone recommend a book that is good for a middle-aged person who would like to try out some proper Japanese cookery (uk-friendly, of course)

Everyday Harumi

Whatevva · 19/12/2015 14:07

That is the one I have been eyeing up. Grin

I don't want to (try to) cook restaurant stuff, just nice rice and stuff, like proper food.

That's what it is, easy, everyday Japanese food, it's great.

Have a look at www.souschef.co.uk their Japanese section has ingredients, hardware and meal kits

Pollyputhtekettleon · 21/12/2015 08:53

The absolute best and most authentic us 'cooking with dog' on YouTube.

CheshireChat · 21/12/2015 13:36

www.japanesecooking101.com/ is great. I'll also recommend a couple of books once I manage to leave DS alone for 5 minutes.

Whatevva · 21/12/2015 15:10

I will have a look at those and maybe manage to buy a few important ingredients in the run up to Christmas.

I am hoping to have a Japanese cooking day with my daughter Smile

Harumi has two great books. My sister in law is japanese and bought them for me.

CheshireChat · 21/12/2015 15:37

Okonomiyaki and sushi are both easy to make. I used to make them as a teen.

IHaveBrilloHair · 21/12/2015 15:38

Sushi is too fiddly for me, I'm totally cackling handed, but love okonomiyaki

IHaveBrilloHair · 21/12/2015 15:39

And if I don't stop her my teenager eats kewpie mayo with a spoon!

CheshireChat · 21/12/2015 15:44

I think okonomiyaki is more of a pain :). This is making me crave Japanese food now.

Whatevva · 21/12/2015 16:02

She is a big girl now and will be teaching me Grin

I like soup noodles. Grin Grin

and rice bowl Grin

and the octopus in the balls, but I expect that will be harder to do round here.

Never tried the octopus in balls, maybe for Christmas. And I taught my mum how to cook Japanese food. I've also requested teriyaki salmon for tea and my DP is all baffled and blaming mumsnet.

Takoyaki. Well worth trying if you get the chance, although DH was not impressed.

I made the takoyaki years ago, they didn't taste at all how they were supposed to but nice anyway.

CheshireChat · 21/12/2015 20:22

That's one thing I struggle with- how do you know they taste right if you've never had them made for you IYKWIM

TheSpectreOfMorningtonCrescent · 21/12/2015 20:26

My dis got me a book called Japanese Hotpot Cooking, it looks great, but there are some basic ingredients that I'm going to struggle to source. Beautiful book though.
