Help - awkward friends coming for lunch - what do I give them??

She is Mrs Perfect and always spends hours cooking something wonderful. He is allergic to garlic which eliminates most of my favourite recipes. The teenage daughter has just decided she no longer eats meat or fish (although she'll eat fish fingers apparently and shellfish).

I'm generally thought of as a good cook and don't usually get stumped ikn this department, but I'm really struggling to think of something that everyone will eat (including my 22mth dd and somewhat fussy 8yr old dd).

It's going to be New Year's Day as well so I guess should be something fairly celebratory/impressive.

Any ideas please?

Here are some ideas although they may not be sufficiently celebratory for your occasion:
1)Crab cakes (does that count as shellfish?) with salad
2) Fantastic mushroom risotto (Alastair Little has one)
3) Mini flans with a fab side salad - you could do a selection of different tartlets e.g. smoked haddock (for fish eaters), cherry tomato and basil
4) A savoury strudel of some sort (e.g. chopped nuts)
5) A spinach and red pepper roulade (Rose Elliott has a recipe, it looks and tastes fab)
6) A rather fancy warm pasta salad e.g. with sundried tomatoes, olives, herbs, pine nuts etc.
7) Cheese fondue?

Best of luck and have fun - don't forget to post your final menu so we can use it when we have tricky guests too!

grilled goats cheese with honey as starter (really easy - just stick rounds of goats cheese in oven, then add honey and serve with salad leaves).

then a roast dinner, with fidhfingers for the daughter. nobody is ever disappointed with a roast.

Do a bit of a selection and people can help themselves;

salads, selection of
dressings
baked potaotes (nice crisp skinned ones)
cheeses
quiches or other savouries
selection of cooked meats - maybe a homebaked ham?
maybe a salmon? or smoked trout
fresh bread, butter

and some of items that Labradora suggested as well!

Surely everyone will find something they like!

SenoraPostrophe · 12/12/2006 18:08

ooh, quiche is a good idea. you can't beat a nice home-made one.

NotQuiteCockney · 12/12/2006 18:21

I'd probably do a big filo log thing we like, with leeks, mushrooms, onions, rice, cheese, almonds and currants in it.

definitely do a buffet! then everyone can eat what they like/can have and you're not struggling to serve separate things or find one common preference. Also good for littlies and you won't have to control kids and lunch at the same time!

I like the suggestion of doing baked potatoes with a range of things to pick at to go with - a couple of quiches (maybe one veggie, one meat), lovely salads, maybe ratatouille? A cheeseboard with grapes and perhaps other fresh fruit. Meringues, rasperries and cream for pud, or good icecream with stem ginger and gingerbread.

Oooh, some great ideas, thanks everyone.

I'd forgotten I posted this yesterday - things have been a bit hectic here...

Buffet is a great idea, and I do a fab onion tart. Like the idea of a home baked ham as well.

Phew, not feeling quite so stressed now!

steak pie - traditional in Scotland, could have an individual veggie version made out of left over pastry or buy em in!
