Thinking of mashing some root veg (parsnips & carrots probably) so that I can make them ahead and freeze them .......

Adding something green like peas/broccoli .......

Then I'd need another one .........

Not a sprouts fan .........

Just interested to see what everyone else does really ......

I love leeks
and roast parsnips are a must with any 'sunday' dinner

Yep, my MIL is doing the usual veg and I'm taking up some additional bits, one of which will include a bowl of mashed veggies - sweet potatos, parsnips, swede & carrots with butter and some horseraddish stirred in. YUM!

franch · 12/12/2006 15:43

Ooh, horseradish, that sounds nice ....

So what 'usual' veg will be served alongside that then teecee? Trying to avoid root veg overload really

Had been thinking of leeks Huw

The mashed veg will be ok frozen in advance won't it?

So there'll be the root veg mash, peas, sprouts, cabbage with greens and bacon, carrots, parsnips, potatoes and then all the other bits, stuffing balls, turkey, sausages, bread sauce etc!.

The veg on Xmas day is really just so you can make a really good bubble the next day!

TEEstheCEEsontobejolly · 12/12/2006 15:47

Yeah I reckon so, yes, yes it'll be fine.

franch · 12/12/2006 15:48

Hmm, ok, now I'm thinking: root veg mash, plus peas & broccoli, and maybe leeks .....

I like cauliflower cheese with root veg masj and turkey but thinks it's a bit ott with everythig else we're having.

Not a fan of leeks with a roast dinner tbh, I like them, they have a place, but for me personally that place isn't with broccoli next to the turkey

We've gotta have red cabbage and carrots (par boiled for 5 mins and then sauteed really slowly with butter and suger and s&p till they're almos tlike sweets) Ummmmmmm.

tassis · 15/12/2006 20:17

Mum always does mashed root veg. I don't love it TBH.

I tend to do delia's red cabbage which you can cook ahead and freeze and then microwave on the day, and oven roast veg which involves quite a bit of chopping but most of which can be done the night before.

franch · 15/12/2006 21:19

Ah, red cabbage, nice idea - how do you cook it Cratchit?

I will be doing carrots with a honey glaze, green beans with lemon butter, brussels with pancetta and mashed swede with nutmeg. All veg will be prepared the nigt before and left in water (except sprouts which must be left dry but covered)

hoxtonchick · 15/12/2006 22:00

i'm sure my mum used to do mashed sprouts. they're just about edible with loads of double cream . god knows how she mashed them though....

skerriesmum · 15/12/2006 22:20

Carrot and turnip are nice mashed together with salt & pepper and loads of butter... the kids will always eat it! It lifts the flavour of both vegs.

skerriesmum · 15/12/2006 22:20

What do you call turnip? Swede?

MerryChipmonkAndAHappyNewey · 15/12/2006 22:35

Skerriesmum, here in Meath we call a turnip a turnip! I think in England a turnip is a white turnip and the orange ones are called swedes.
