We are having a farwell party for close friends on Friday night. Lots of people with kids.
It's in a hall with 1 ordinary oven. I was thinknig of doing sausages in buns( good quality ones!) with fairy cakes as a dessert. I only have Friday to prepare and don't want to spend the time at the party cooking or planning a buffet that then goes to waste.
Is this wierd? Can you think of anything easier and more impressive?

Why not? If it starts late then people won't necessarily expect food, so that will be a bonus.

Like you say, without outside help you are going to spend all night in the kitchen otherwise, which I'm sure isn't the point of the evening!

Any more thoughts?

Chilli and jacket potatoes with salad and cheese (to cater for veggies)?
Could do jackets in oven or in advance and wrap in foil then big vats or slow cookers with chilli?

robinpud · 11/12/2006 19:32

Chilli would be good but would mean either using paper plates or washing loads of plates and cutlery which I am trying to avoid.

Could you get a load of fish and chips in from a local place?!

i would stick with the sausages and get lots of different ones. then maybe do a stew or curry or chilli something like that that people can help themselves to. Just get plenty of dieposable stuff and bin it all after they sell plates cups cutlery etc in £ shops. and a couple of big gateuxs for after, choc, strawberry, black forest, trifle etc.

Good idea having different types of sausage - and vegetarian option? You could bring some interesting relishes like red onion marmalade which goes really well with good quality sausages.

THe best thing about the sausages is that they will just go in the oven for as long as you want.

And agree about the gateaux - I think somewhere like Iceland or Lidl would have cheap ones, or you could go upmarket at Waitrose who have a fab patisserie selection.

or even costco for gateuxs they do some really nice ones and they are very reasonable

What about some soups in polystyrene cups - there is a nice chilli con carne one on the good food web site.
