Sweet chutney, what do I do with it?

I have been given a little gift basket of it - caramelized red onion, orchard fruits (which I've just seen has sultanas in it so that's going straight in the food bank box), and plum with bramley apple. I think I know what to do with the savoury one - curries, dips, but what would you use a sweet chutney for?

Cheese and crackers.

Why have you got a problem with sultanas?

MoriartyIsMyAngel · 25/11/2015 11:14

I don't know, I just do. I'm trying to get better with dried fruit, but sultanas are never going to be in my good books!

I'd stir in a few tablespoons if I was doing a long cooked stew or a tagine. To add a bit of sweetness and depth.

I use peach chutney as a base for goats cheese tartlets with puff pastry.

You can also use the sweet ones with curries, similar to mango chutney.

Ah now living where Mrs Balls originates from (any ex SAffers will know what I am talking about), we use chutney for everything...

You cant have curry without chutney on the side.

If you have cheese and crackers, shove some on the side of the plate too.

Spaghetti Bolognaise just isnt the same without a dollop of chutney in the mince. Same for cottage pie, or any mince for that matter.

You can do a nice chicken bake by making a cooking sauce from a cup of mayo, a cup of chutney and a cup of fruit juice. Mix together and pour over the chicken pieces and bake them.

Any meat on a sandwich is always tonnes better with chutney on as well.
Especially left over meat loaf Wink

I will probably think of more as soon as I press "post"

murphy that's exactly the peach chutney I'm talking about. I have Mrs Balls on everything Grin

I cover sausages in chutney and bake them in the oven.

murphys · 25/11/2015 12:15

Squad... oh yes, bbq sausage bake we call that one Wink, mix some tomato sauce in with it too.....

I go through bottles of it. Are you in UK Squad?

SquadGoals · 25/11/2015 12:29

We're in SA, living in Limpopo and working on the new power plant up there for the next couple of years.

When we leave, half my suitcase is going to be Mrs Balls.

Might have to try the chicken one.

murphys · 25/11/2015 13:02

Ah yes I think we chatted before....

Oh I forgot about Bobotie...... Wink

Sweet chutneys are good with cheese. You could try a little with roast duck. Plum and Apple sounds like it might go well with roast pork.

OldBeanbagz · 26/11/2015 11:11

Chicken & chutney sandwiches go down well in our house. DD normally opts for mango chutney but i prefer plum with mine.

mercifulTehlu · 26/11/2015 11:16

Chutney is chutney, surely. There's no such thing as chutneys that are particularly for savoury things or sweet things. All chutney is fairly sweet. Great with cold meat or cheese. Or stir a spoonful into a stew to give it a bit of richness and sweetness.
