Shelf life of cooking oils (I need to get out more….)

I never trust use-by dates on things as I know food companies put them on to make us buy things we don't need (cynic, moi?), BUT - wondering how long cooking oils last once opened. In theory I have a rather good selection (hazelnut oil, avocado oil, chilli oil, garlic oil, sesame oil etc.), but have a nasty feeling probably needs chucking out. Can anyone throw some light on the matter?

If they smell and taste OK, I'm sure they'll be fine*

*disclaimer - I cut mould off cheese and generally throw nothing away.

I find most oils go rancid pretty quickly - its really obvious when you smell it unless you are my mother

Smell them. Ignore dates.

MrsLeigh, you sound like my kind of woman!!

However, I think I am pushing things on this particular front and may have to concede defeat and pour God knows how many pounds worth of posh oil down the sink - ouch!

Unless you want to block the drains don't pour it down the sink! Just bin the bottles oil and all

dementedpixie · 16/11/2015 17:48

D9 not pour any of it down the sink, just chuck the bottle with the oil in the bin

Sh*te. Done it already. In the interests of recycling the glass bottles.
