Anyone's dc got a food texture "phobia"?

For lack of a better word, my FIL, DH and DS1 all have a sort of food texture "phobia". Many foods are rejected purely because of their texture - often soft, moist, etc. They gag on them if they try them. No matter how many times I give those foods they are always rejected. Does anyone else have this?

DS was like this during the first 2 years, but he seems to have outgrown it, having said that... he is still a bit of a fussy eater...

mamama · 08/12/2006 02:07

DS doesn't like anything 'slimy' or lumpy, so no cooked apple unless it's pureed, no cottage cheese, rice pudding etc. He doesn't gag if he tries them, just looks completely appalled and spits them out. But I think he's just fussy! I'm hoping he grows out of it.

jabberwocky · 08/12/2006 04:05

Absolutely! Beef, crunchy veggies... going blank now but he is, in general, a very picky eater.

purplemonkeydasheranddancer · 08/12/2006 06:11

my ds is like that! but then, er, so am i i've only started eating beans because i hated the texture for soooo long. (weird what having a baby does to you! my tastes have changes completely!)

littleshebear · 08/12/2006 21:23

I am like this. I cannot eat 95% of prepacked sandwiches because of the texture - I would describe them as slimy/soggy . Also can't cope with big lumps in chutney, mayonnaise, or raw tomatoes. Just can't swallow them. Can just about cope with cooked tomatoes but only if there are no big lumps. I am quite regularly unable to eat overcooked vegetables and so on.(Overcooked to me, that is.)Can't eat any fat or gristle on meat at all either.I am much better and more tolerant of strange sweet textures though - isn't that odd?

My ds2 is like me - I think we both like quite plain, dry food, with no unexpected surprises! Thank God the other 3 are normal and my Dh eats chutney off the spoon. I am a lot better now than when I was little though.

TheChristmasArmadillo · 08/12/2006 21:26

ds (2) is but has a lot of problems with eating in general.

I am very fussy with texture - cannot eat beans, or sauces/soups with 'lumps' in. Makes me gag and vomit (mm pleasant ).

Don't think its gonna improve at all, but doesn't have any effect on my life really.

Dottydotthehalls · 08/12/2006 21:28

Both ds's have been like this to a certain extent - ds1 more than ds2. Hopefully it's just a phase...

imaginaryfriend · 08/12/2006 21:32

I've always been like this, dd is too. I can't bear runny sloppy foods like soup or stews and dd is just the same. I also can't stand skins on things like tomatoes, apples and when you get stringy bits on green beans or sugarsnap peas. YUCK makes me want to gag thinking about that. Dd isn't actually as bad as me but she generally doesn't like things mixed up together she likes to see them separately on her plate.

corrina28 · 08/12/2006 21:34

ds who is 7.6 still gags on all meat, soup, baked beans etc etc etc. he has been like this from when we first started weaning him, every now and them we do bribe him to try something different, we got him to try chicken the other week and he said "its ok", so now he just likes on fish, sausages beef burgers etc and he has a weight problem, but we still perservere with meat, hopefully one day he will eat it.

WhenSantaWentQuietlyMad · 08/12/2006 21:38

Yes, NY, my dd is like this. Often seemingly on a whim, she can't eat the same tasting but differently textured foods.

Only on reading this thread did I realise that I am the same. Mayo on sandwiches, baked beans, soup etc etc. No more wondering where she gets it from then.

FairyTaleOfNewYork · 08/12/2006 21:42

dd2 is like this. cannot eat many foods as she gagas and vomits. she has slowly prgressed onto cereals with milk (will now eat rice crispies but no other cereals), bread (not toast surprisingly), have jsut got her started on cheese toasties, wont touch most meats apart rom chicken, but the most surpisingly thing is she loves curry and rice. has to be mixed up. she still thrusts her tongue forward when eating, wehich means she is messy, but tbh i am just ahppy she is progressing from completely dry and bland foods. a year ago, i was lucky if she would eat one meal a week, now we are upto 5meals she will definatly eat, which includes curry, shepherds pie, roast dinner, pasta and meatballs.

mymama · 09/12/2006 07:49

My ds doesn't like softer textures. He won't eat pikelets, fruit bun or cakes/muffins and such. Think because he was allergic to wheat when introducing foods so had a lot of rice crackers and "crunchier" foods. Now he is fine with wheat but will only eat bread.

christie1 · 10/12/2006 21:21

yep, my ds is 8 now and is a little better but still extremely picky and hates foods of certain, textures, smells and they cannot touch each other on the plate. I do alot of smoothies with loads of fruit to ensure the 5 a day (or as close I can get to it). It's tough but a real phobia, or wahtever, not just a kid strying to make it difficult for us.

SantasFattymumma · 10/12/2006 21:32

DS has a long list of things eh wont eat. he has ASD so its a little different to a phobia but still more than just refusing certain foods.

the biggest is that he wont eat anything "noisy" hich means quite a lot of foods are ruled out straight away.

NYcicles · 14/12/2006 00:07

Thanks everyone - glad to see that it's not just us then!
