Any ideas how to cook either of these and how quickly I need to eat them. Got them in my organic box this week.

you can fry kale with some chopped up bacon & eat with sausages

sprout tops treat as cabbage I think

I keep getting curly kale in my veg box and I don't like it. It always ends up mouldering in the fridge and then going in the bin.

MerryPiffmas · 06/12/2006 20:54

curly kale is ick and I adore most cabbages/green leaves
Boil it and make it into bubble and squeak is the only way of making it palatable IMO

Beabea · 07/12/2006 08:25

BonyM - you can choose to not have it if you get your box from Abel and Cole.

Have an inch or two of boiling water in pan. Shred the leaves and the less coarse of the stalks straight into boiling water. That way the enzymes are killed before they get chance to kill the vitamin c. Push down into water with potato maqsher or back of spoon. Simmer until tender. Will probably take about 15 minutes. Drain well, pressing out water, in colander. Chop roughly. Use the cooking water to make tasty gravy. Very good for you. The sooner you use them the more vitamins you will get but they will keep 3 or 4 days.

Thanks for all the ideas. I did the sprout tops last night. I just washed them and popped them as they were into a pan and stirred around with the excess water. I then added a dob of butter. They were really yummy. Will have the other one tonight.

Kale is maybe the least palatable green leaf for some because it's quite bitter espesh at the end of season (not yet though!) so if you've had it at it's bitterest you probably think it's not good.

Slat and garlic supress bitter tastes, so the best thing to do it stir fry in with crushed garlic and soya sauce. So high in calcium and folate that it's a pity to miss out on!

I've had great success with this kale recipe, even with my 3 yo ds1 a bit wary of vegetables.

Fry some garlic and chopped onion.
Add the chopped kale and saute for a few minutes until soft.
Add 2 tins of chopped tomatoes and a bit of water and simmer until cooked.
Whizz it all in the blender until it's sauce consitency.
Stir in a very generous dollop of cream cheese (this neutralises the tartness of the kale).
Serve with pasta.

we have curly kale quite often my ds2 says its his fave at the moment sometimes i make it into a sauce like above or other times i make a nice grazy, like cumin and red wine (a nigella recipe) and then i serve that with good quality sausages, mash and the curly kale which we just steam for a little bit
