Gluten-free desserts

Hello, my MIL is visiting soon, and is gluten-free. I'd like to be able to make some desserts that she can eat. I have a recipe for a flourless chocolate cake, which is really nice, but I don't want to offer her something she may get everywhere. I'm vegetarian and if I eat out I get a bit bored with only having say two choices of veggie lasagne or mushroom risotto. I don't know if this chocolate cake recipe is too similar to the gf chocolate brownies that you see by the tills in coffee shops. Do you have a favourite dessert that may be a bit different?

How about making a dessert that's naturally gluten free? I've got a rice pudding on as we speak (with dried cranberries and dusted with pumpkin pie spice to make it special Grin).

I've not tried it but a gluten free cheesecake probably isn't too much of a faff. You'd just need to use GF digestives.

I make myself a choc truffle pud every week. 200 ml double cream + 200g melted dark chocolate. Mix and leave in a cake tin until set then turn out and dust with cocoa. Very cheap and chocolatey.

I like pavlova, which is naturally gluten free), apple and blackberry crumble using GF oats in the topping (I'm told it tastes as nice as non-GF), lemon drizzle cake made with GF flour. And my mum makes a lovely almond cake using ground almonds instead of flour.

Gluten free things I've done are brownies, icecream, meringues, fruit salad, ricekrispie cakes (there were kids about).
I'm nicking the rice pudding idea!!
I've found it easier to go naturally gluten free, rather than manipulate a favourite recipient.

Recipie not recipient......

Going a bit more grown up, chocolate mouse and poached pears.

What about something like this roulade
It looks absolutely lovely and would be very indulgent.

Spikeinhiscoat · 15/10/2015 19:26

Some lovely ideas, thank you all.
Are oats gf, or did you mean 'special' ones? I had always assumed oats didn't contain gluten as there was no wheat, but I bought some flapjack bites before and was told they were a nono. The rice pudding is something we have quite regularly anyway, especially getting to this time of year, a comfort food on a cold afternoon. I'm not sure if I'm brave enough to try the roulade. It looks amazing, but my one previous attempt did not look pretty. Maybe this one would be more forgiving as its meringue? You've all given me some good ideas, thank yoy

Some people can tolerate oats but some can't. You get can GF ones though.

All those recipes sound lovely.

sparkleup · 15/10/2015 19:34

Oats are quite often cross contaminated. You can get gluten free oats, but a lot of people with gluten problems also have oats problems (not that I'm bitter I can't have porridge or flapjacks again much)

Pannacotta with berries
Creme brulee
Syllabub
Lemon Mousse

Google Jamie Oliver gf carrot cake, it's amazing and quite 'puddingy' iyswim. Gf cheesecake is dead easy using gf biscuits. Fruit fool, chocolate mousse and pavlova all gf.

PurpleDaisies · 15/10/2015 19:41

I make rocky road with bought gluten free biscuits if I'm in a hurry.
