Does anyone actually eat these,or is it just traditional to have them ? I do love turkish delight though. Does anyone ever drink creme de menthe ?

I love dates. And am quite partial to a liqueur chocolate (well, any chocolate really...)

Sprouts, not so much.

JackieNoHoHo · 03/12/2006 18:10

I like figs, but not dates. Can take or leave liqueur chocolates. I like turkish delight too.

DimpledThighs · 03/12/2006 18:29

don't like any of those but love turkish delight and chocolate ginger. I love all the dried fruit in mince pies, christmas cake etc. as SOOO good for you!

moondog · 03/12/2006 18:32

I live in Turkey and their Turkish delight and figs are in a completely different league.

zippitippitoes · 03/12/2006 18:33

french glace fruite eg from clermont ferrand are lovely..not orange and lemons crystallised slices though (do they still sell those)

ferrero rocher puke

Gingerbear · 03/12/2006 18:34

was just about to say the same Moondog. Proper turkish delight is lush.
Also, try turron from Spain - Spanish traditional Christmas sweet. It is yummy nougaty and almondy.

Gingerbear · 03/12/2006 18:34

Some of the choccies from lakeland are nice too.

DimpledThighs · 03/12/2006 18:34

ooooooh moondog I didn't know you lived in turkey - I love turkish food and their turkish delight bears no resemblence to our jellified stuff - all aromatic and beautifully textured as I remember.

my main is all the lovely baklava you must be able to get hold of - yum!

What do you do for christmas there?

santacutie · 03/12/2006 20:37

turron, yum, but very hard on teeth ! I like halva too and baklava !!

Gingerbear · 03/12/2006 20:42

mmmmmmmm, turron
You can buy soft turron too.

Gingerbear · 03/12/2006 20:43

ooh, yes, halva, also nice, but I tend to eat it until I feel sick.

moondog · 03/12/2006 22:37

Hi Dimply.
Yes Turkish food is fantastic and I was amazed at how delicious the Turkish Delight (or lokum as is known there) is.Have also eaten more baklava than is decent and over the years have lugged tonnes of it back to UK.

My dh has worked there fro 4 years but I come and go with the children. It is a very isolated Eastern city with not much to do.

I've never spent Christmas there.Would be too depressing for words!

elclose · 04/12/2006 15:59

we have a turkish food centre down the road from us and its safe to say i go in there at least 4-5 times a week to get bread olives and baklava!! YUM YUM

DimpledThighs · 04/12/2006 17:51

well all I can say is that I am jealous of anyone with a baklava supply - I even made some for DP last year!

santacutie · 04/12/2006 17:55

ooh - was it the shreddy one ?

OP posts:
DimpledThighs · 05/12/2006 10:31

no - it was layers of filo, layer of nuts, more layrs of filo, bake and then pour over a crazily aromatic headachey sweet syrap.

It was sex in heaven!

santacutie · 05/12/2006 12:00

oh yum- I can just picture it....and imagine the taste !

Dried Figs - luvverly (Quite agree that the Turkish ones are fantastic but I like the ones here too though not as much)

Dates - quite nice too

Liquer chocolates - not really but I will eat them when I have a chocolate craving and there is nothing else - I generally regret it though

Creme de menthe - urghhhhhhh - does anyone actually drink that stuff?

Turkish delight - YUUUUKKKKK (even the stuff in Turkey - I tried it when I was there and yes it is different to the stuff we have here but IMO only marginally less yukky)

Baklava - now that truly is food from the Gods

Oh halva and Torrone (Italian verison) - all lovely

Gosh I feel a sweet craving coming on !!!
