Anyone know of any good Roman Empire cook books? (a bit niche)

I have two, Dining as a Roman Emperor here and the British Museums Classical Cookbook

Bit hard to find some ingredients! (though I managed to grow some lovage and rue, but finding brains seems impossible)

if anyone has found any other books, please tell! I've made a few recipes from those two books, but interested in finding more (makeable) recipes.

thanks.

(Just in case, this isn't a windup)

Do you make your own Garum?

well - nuoc nam (vietnamese fish sause) is supposed to be the closest. But i can't get that either, and I've tried hard.

A reasonable alternative is to melt insane amounts of anchovies in oil over a low heat til it sort of becomes a heaped mess of shreds. It's strange, most recipes use it (even some desserts!) but it seems to lose some of its overpowering nature and become a nice flavouring.

Not joking about insane quantities. For a meal for 12 people I need -seriously- 50 small tins. Most recipes seem to use 3 tablespoons, sometimes 6, which means about 4-5 tins or 9-10.

Thank you!

Can't get it sent here but a friend is coming over soon, so I'll order several bottles and he can bring them.

:)
