Vegetarian Xmas 'centrepiece' with no nuts?

sharkjump · 02/12/2006 00:39

Dh veggie, I'm mostly veggie (eat fish) & allergic to various tree nuts.

So far either I've been pregnant & going green at mere thought of Xmas food OR we've had his entire extended family to feed OR both - that was last year, so I did a joint of beef & the non meat eaters had everything but the meat...

This year it's just us, the kids, MIL & vegetarian SIL, so I'm doing exclusively vegetarian.

Any suggestions for a 'turkey substitute'? Can't risk nuts. I'm a fairly confident cook & don't mind a bit of faffing about - since the veggies outnumber the carnivores for once, it'd be nice to do something a bit fancy rather than palming the vegetarians off with something from M&S...

Had been wanting to pull this thread up in preparation of xmas

vege xmas ideas

I would normally do a koubiliac recipe I have somewhere, which is a giant filo log, with rice, feta, cheddar, leeks, mushrooms, currants and almonds in it. I think you could leave out the almonds with no problem though.

I like the giant filo log, as it is essentially a roast, iyswim, just not a meat one.

what about a big roasted pepper and goat cheese tart or something like that?

poppiesmum · 02/12/2006 08:54

Delia Smith Vegetarian Collection has a recipe for a parsnip and cheese roulade.

I do a Gordon Ramsey thingie which is mushrooms and red onions caramelised and then mixed with stilton and all piled onto a sheet of filo pastry. Then cut another sheet of filo into a lattice and stick on top with egg and milk. So tasty although very lardy.

Sorry I've not been back on to thank people for these ideas - poorly 'puter!

Think the chestnut wellington from papillon's link is in the front atm - many thanks for that!

I usually make nut roast en croute, a nut roasty or veggie filling bound with cheese and a chestnut pate on top, wrapped in a puff pastry envelope, decorated with pastry holly leaves and glazed with egg, it looks good on the table. Hope you enjoy whatever you make.

my mum always used to do us this savoury choux pastry ring stuffed with mushrooms in cream and madeira. About 1 million calories a mouthful, but gorgeous... Think it might have been a Deila recipe. Now I eat fish we do a River Cafe seabass on potatoes & capers (aka 'posh fish and chips')

MamaG · 15/12/2006 18:58

shoppingbagsundereyes that sounds yum! Any chance of a recipe

TheBlonde · 15/12/2006 19:18

What about stuffed pumpkin? It's a GH recipe if I recall correctly

crunchie · 21/12/2006 22:14

OK now I am dithering!! I know that it is nearly christmas but I thought I might actually decide what I am eating!! MIL said she'd do something, but her food tastes foul and one time she did a chicken casserole topped woith sliced potatoes planning to give me the potataoes as my main meal

So the choices are delias parsnip roulade thingy here or a chestnut, spinach and mushroom totre from BBC good food veggie christmas (1999!!)

The torte is basically spinach wilted with mixed fancy mushrooms and chestnuts with cinnemon, garlic, coriander and marmalade (!)! all in a filo wrapping.

Help me choose, they both sound good, I need to make on Christmas eve and reheat, or make and then bake at last min IYWKIM

hobnob · 24/12/2006 09:45

I'd do the torte. It sounds delicious and special. Can I come?
