Soup Maker

I’m thinking about getting a soup maker. A friend has one and although I first did not see the attraction in such a gadget I’m now warming to the idea of “lazy fresh soup”, especially now that we are going in to winter and it seems a good way to get a bit more veg in to the DC.

Anyone has one? I’m tempted to get the Tefal.

Recommendations and tips are greatly appreciated.

Thanks

I don't like soup but I know people who do and they love the Morphy Richards one further down the page that you linked to. Very easy and convenient according to them.

Brace yourself for all the witty 'my soupmaker is a saucepan and a stick blender' replies.

My mum has the morphy richards one - and she loves it - so much easier at the end of the day to throw some bits in it and she can e eating a fresh home made dinner within 20 minutes or so.

I am looking at buying one myself but am hoping to get one in the sale, will probably go for the morphy richards too.

These look interesting but are they more hassle to clean than my pan and blender.

I've just made a delicious soup in a pan on the hob made of one leek, one potato, garlic, a pint of chicken stock, spring onion and some milk.

Took me 15 mins to cook then I used a potato mash so it was the right texture for me. Delicious.

However I love the idea of chucking it all into one machine and turning on a switch as I'd probably make more soup.

Will be sticking the morphy Richards onto my Xmas list.

What attracts me to the Tefal is the easy clean feature. Does the MR have one?

I know that I sound very lazy but the idea of chucking it all in the machine so I can do something else is very appealing to me. I normally get home around 6.30-7pm and by then I don’t fancy cooking soup on the hob. I used to make batches of soup in the weekend and freeze during the winter months, the soup maker seems a handy alternative.

I have to fess up that when I first heard of soup makers I could not believe that I would ever consider getting one but the more I hear about them the more tempted I am to get one.

Also looks like the MR Model: 501010 is GBP 40 in Robert Dyas as the moment which seems a reasonable price...

We use a soup maker (given for Xmas, we didn't even know they existed). It's great. We'd never made soup before but now make it regularly. Just chuck in chopped veg (can be big chunks), herbs/spices, stock cube and water. Switch on and leave for 30 mins.
We like not having to check on it/stir/blend etc, we can go do bathtime etc while it cooks.

Only criticism I have its supposed to be able to make chunky soup too (there's a 'chunky' button) but always seems to make it smooth. But that's probably just how we're using it.

Probably not that great for someone who actually enjoys cooking more than we do or has more time to cook.

PeaceOfWildThings · 05/10/2015 16:57

I like mine and it is easy enough to clean, just a wipe around. I just don't use it enough! Must get it out more, now we are in the winter months. :-)

Thanks, BlueBrightFuture, I've just chopped and sautéed the veg of a spicy vegetable soup in my 'sauté and soup' Morphy Richards. I've set it to chunky and it should be ready in under 28 minutes.

The other thing about mine is, it also blends cold, so makes juices too, if you have a glut of apples.

What I got it for is to make dairy free soups, and also to aff the skins of organic root veggies to soups, as seems a shame to buy ready made soups made with inferiour ingredients!

Starting to think about getting the MR now... could even start with the one currently on offer at Robert Dyas. Sitting next to the window at work and seeing the rain on the glass makes me want soup even more!

My soup last night was delicious. Also havebthe leftovwrs with some leftover noodles for lunch!

Here's what went into it, in case you're interested!

One shollot, finely chopped and sauted in the MR while I cut up one small butternut squash from the garden.

Squash goers in, gave it a stir.

Added spice (chilli, galangal, sumac) and herbs (rosemary and thyme) and a pinch of salt.
Added some leftover cooked chicken, finely chopped. Some other veggies finely chopped (kale, brocolli, carrot, etc)

Garlic clove, then a mug of vegetable stock up to the 'minimum' line.
Lid on, set to saute. Left for over an hour, chopped and reheated a little to eat.

PeaceOfWildThings · 06/10/2015 10:46

Not sure why my photos didn't post...

PeaceOfWildThings · 06/10/2015 10:48

My MR makes 2 adult sized portions of soup, 3 small lunch bowls at a pinch. The 'max' line is quite low. That is one of the disadvantages. Uf you were hoping to do bulk cookung, you're better off with a big pan.

PeaceOfWildThings · 06/10/2015 10:51

On the other hand, I served the soup, pilut the leftovers in the tupperware bowl for today, wiped the insides of the MR and left on drainer overnight and it is back in the cupboard. Whereas a big pan, mixer, etc would be on the side or still in the dishwasher...

Titsalinabumsquash · 06/10/2015 11:10

I have the MR one. Smile

In the winter as soon as we've all eaten our Sunday roast I stick any leftover veg and meat in it with sown stock and put it on chunky, then I fill up 5 Tupperware containers and I have a weeks worth of fresh soup for lunches.

A rinse round gets it clean and if anything is a bit more stubborn I fill it to the max line with water and the tiniest squirt of washing up liquid (anymore and it overflows with bubbles) and put it on a smooth soup cycle and it gets it lovely and clean.

BlueBrightFuture · 06/10/2015 14:25

I have ordered the MR Saute one. Should get it on Thursday, will be hunting for recipes now...

Thanks all you have totally changed my mind as to which one to buy. Not sure if the saute function will make a difference but I think it is worth the small price difference.
