its been a long time since i did this and i cant really remember. is it 4 months or 6? i saw an advert for baby foods and on the picture, the smaller jars which i know say "from four months" on them, had the "four months" bit blanked out and a slogan on the page saying weaning is not recomended until six months. thats a tad confusing for my fuddled brain!! dd is quite little for her age but then she was born little so im not quite sure what i should be doing? she seems to be quite interested in our food.

Officially 6 months now. I will have a look and see if I find a list of indicators of readiness, which included being able to sit up, teeth, lack of tongue thrust. Being a certain weight was not on the list.

Don't they say between 4 and 6 months? Not before 4 months and by the time they are 6 months? I recently asked a similar question nightowl (do you EVER sleep ?) as DD is 3 and a bit months and I weaned DS early at 13 and a half weeks.
I will wait with DD at least until 4 months (18 weeks) and then will take her lead ... hopefully we'll make it to 6 months but after 4 months I won't worry about it ...
How old is your little one?

LipstickMum · 13/05/2004 08:35

I have a feeling WHO are recommending 6... but I'm not 100% sure about that.

LipstickMum · 13/05/2004 08:49

OK, I am attempting my first ever link crosses fingers this is the WHO recommendation

LipstickMum · 13/05/2004 08:51

Incidentally, I went by my dd's signs and began introducing food alongside bf from about 4 1/2 or 5 months I think.

Ghosty · 13/05/2004 08:56

Also it is really important that you give milk BEFORE solids until they are 8 or 9 months ... well, that is what they say here in NZ ... can't remember what they said in the UK 4 years ago when DS was little.

handbagaddiction · 13/05/2004 22:02

Ghosty,

That's interesting because my HV told me to always give the solids first otherwise they wouldn't eay them and would be too full of milk! Must admit though that I didn't completely follow her advice - tried to make the 11:00 milk earlier (at say 10) to give dd time to get hungry before lunch at 11:30 and then completely disassociated (is that a word??) milk from 'tea' and it seemed to work quite well. Still eats like a sparrow though compared to a lot of the babies I know!

mummytojames · 13/05/2004 23:55

the recomendation by profesionals is six months now but if shes starting to et intrested in your food try and offer her a bit of you mashed down and see how see reacts i started mine at 15 weeks after getting nto a argument with hv you now your baby better than anyone if you feel shes ready try her with a bit and just take it from there

nightowl · 14/05/2004 00:56

toddlerbob, what are the signs? dd is going on 18 weeks and mil keeps asking when she'll move on to solids! she can't sit up yet tho so am confused as to when is right time.

bbensley · 02/06/2004 07:48

My dd is 20 weeks and hasn't really shown any signs yet. She still sleeps through, rarely finishes a 6oz bottle and is as happy as Larry so I'm waiting for her

She does watch me eat with interest but food all seems a bit messy to me so I'm happy to wait till 6m

I checked one of my many books and it says after 4 m and before 6m. Look out for growing interest in your food, return to a more disturbed night and hungrier in the day so goes less time between feeds.

Found this that might help hazelinh

hazlinh · 02/06/2004 08:12

ooh great link. thanks bbensley.

hercules · 02/06/2004 09:18

If bottlefeeding i dont think there are any benefits to waiting until 6 months. I think the 6 month thing applies to exclusive breastfeeding.

bbensley · 02/06/2004 09:33

My HV has advised 6m to us all, bottle or bf so I'm all confused now.

Going away next week so I reckon bottles till I come back then who knows

hazlinh · 02/06/2004 15:13

what about if taking ebm from a bottle? cos thats what dd has during the day

hercules · 02/06/2004 16:36

No, is formula that i mean.

JulieF · 02/06/2004 22:31

Studies show that around the age of 6 months babies develop something in their gut which reduces the risks of allergies etc. All the studies have been done with breastfed babies however, the jury is still out on bottlefed.

Therefore the DOH and WHO recomend that babies are exclusivly breastfed until 6 months.

For both bottle and breastfed babies the later you can leave it the more thier guts are able to digest the food without problems.
