From v nice takeaway near us - fairly sure they cook fresh. Do you reheat your leftovers the next day?

usually we have no leftovers, hence asking the question. But tonight is just me not dh. And I craved curry.

We always save some for later, do not refrigerate it, & sometimes leave it for 2 days. Always been fine (so far).

When reheating in microwave, arrange it around the edge of the plate with a space in the middle as the middle never gets heated. Then mix it up & heat it again Smile

Unless you know the rice has only been cooked once and then cooled quickly and stored in the fridge then throw it away.

Uncooked rice can contain spores of Bacillus cereus, a bacterium that can cause food poisoning. When the rice is cooked, the spores can survive.

If the rice is left standing at room temperature, the spores can grow into bacteria. These bacteria will multiply and may produce toxins that cause vomiting or diarrhoea.

The longer cooked rice is left at room temperature, the more likely it is that the bacteria or toxins could make the rice unsafe to eat.

Definitely yes, I'm sure there's a scientific explanation of why it tastes better that way, I can't remember what it is but I'm sure I've read it somewhere.

All the time. I leave it on the side, at room temperature, and then I eat it all cold, mixed together in a bowl (even the rice). It has never done me any damage.

Today I had leftover chicken tikka masala and tadka dhal in a jacket potato. In deference to DH's paranoia as I'm pregnant, I did microwave it to piping hot this time. I wouldn't usually.

Certainly will do that. Have even hoisted self off sofa to put in fridge now instead of wait for a few hours until I go to bed...

Reheating rice until it is piping hot won't kill the toxins. It isn't worth the risk, especially if you are pregnant.

I know I am repeating myself, but I have suffered from bacillus cereus poisoning and it was awful.

Growing up in a tropical climate where rice is eaten pretty much everyday, I have never heard of anyone getting food poisoning from rice that is left out. There are no health warnings about it either.

I am paranoid about re-heating rice, as I have heard such horror stories, but DH does it regularly and never seems to suffer any consequences. Like blueshoes, he grew up in a hot country where rice is eaten daily. He thinks I'm crazy, but I still won't take the risk!

The chances of getting food poisoning from rice is fairly low, yes. That's why people always say "oh but I've been doing it for years and nothing bad has happened etc etc" BUT if you are one of the unlucky ones you will really wish you had paid attention to the warnings. Totally not worth the risk IMO.

I hate this "It's never happened to me so it can't be true" argument.

The fact is that not all cooked rice will contain toxins caused by bacillus cereus, but there is a risk and I'm not prepared to play Russian roulette with my diet, and I certainly wouldn't risk it if I was pregnant.

It is not it has never happened to me rather it has never happened to anyone I know young and old in a hot country that eats rice day in and day out and even now in UK, my family eats rice regularly as well, frequently re-heated.

I just find it really curious what this bacteria is. Kampeki, I am with your dh.

I got food poisoning from someone who cooked curry and rice in advance for a large group. She then reheated the curry and rice but only to lukewarm. Around fifty people had food poisoning. The pain was awful , I went really hot and it came out both ends for about 16 hours.
This was 13 years ago and it was so awful I remember it clearly.

Bunbaker and AndNow, sorry for your experience. How did you know for sure it was the rice and not something else, like the food/curry that went with it?
