Tomato sauce -with or without sugar

I have made tomato sauce with and without sugar and tbh, I could not taste the difference between the two. So why do recipes call for the addition of sugar?
TIA

Sometimes sugar does enhance the taste of tomatoes - when I make a tomato salad I always sprinkle on some sugar (and salt and pepper)

I think it does enhance the flavour. Most of the time i think you need it, maybe your tin was of particularly ripe, naturally sweet toms.

I dont think there is much harm in adding a pinch per tin of tomatos you are cooking down - that equates to very little in a child's portion at the end.

Thanks. I'm not concerned about the amount of sugar because when the meal is divided up, the quantity of sugar in each portion is really insignificant. I just wanted to understand the logic behind adding sugar to a tomato sauce. I used plum tomatoes from Aldi so maybe they retain more of their flavour than chopped tomatoes?
