I have no idea if it is a hard cheese or soft one, and I have a recipe that I want to try. Have looked in Asda, Tesco's and M&S.

Unpressed cheese of the Stracchino (don't know what that is) surfaced ripened soft cheese with a brown rind!!

I know that means nothing but will try and find out anything else!!

michellefromlakeland · 12/05/2004 12:01

I had it at my saddo tapas night at waitrose - its slighlty soft ad went well with quince jelly on a stick

oliveoil · 12/05/2004 12:02

oooh, if its a soft one can I eat it if I am pregnant? It will be cooked with marscapone, chorizo and pasta in a bake like thing. Non diet obv .

Off on lunch now, I DEMAND answers on my return from chefs

I htought so , yes. dh also had to be a lot more involved.

make sure he sleeps in a differnt room and so gets some sleep so he can get up with dd1

oliveoil · 12/05/2004 13:21

He is v good and hands on with dd so i suppose I am lucky - my friends hubbys are all a waste of space, or most of them are. I just remember the first few months with dd as a complete nightmare of no sleep and learning to b/f, spose I will know what I am doing this time round, ish.

Dh has been banished to the spare room already, my bump is taking over the bed!

Found the info below (www.teddingtoncheese.co.uk) - the cheese looks like Brie but with a pinky orange rind!!

Although the cheese is pasteurised it seems it does not have a safe symbol for consumption during pregnancy!! I think I would steer clearmaybe it is the mouldy rind and not the pasteurisation?? - Mozzarella I can't see as a substitute!!

Creamy, supple texture, thin pinkish rind and an unusual yeasty flavour.

Is made using pasteurised milk.

The name Taleggio is taken from the area where this cheese was first made, Val Taleggio in Bergamo. Originally the cheese was made in the mountains but its production has spread from the Alpine regions to large areas of the Po valley. The making of Taleggio is believed to go back to the tenth or eleventh century, with the first documents mentioning the cheese, along with grana, in the year 1200. However, until the early 1900's it was simply called 'stracchino': a name which is still used, especially in Lombardy, and which defines not so much a specific cheese, as the large family of soft, square-shaped cheeses very popular in the region.

The origin of the generic term 'stracchino' relates to the Lombard dialect word 'stracch' which means tired or exhausted. It relates to the condition of the herd upon finally reaching the plain after their long stay on the Alpine pastures. The cows, although worn out by the long journey, were still able to produce milk fit for making cheese, and this cheese they called stracchino

Ooooooh, aren't you the clever sleuth??!! Thank you! See what you mean about mozzerella not being good substitute.

Creamy, supple texture? Hmmmm, Dairylea?

oliveoil · 12/05/2004 14:35

oooooooh (I like my oooooh's on this thread) there is one near me, I will send dh to investigate, thank you! Maybe I could cut the rind stuff off it that is maybe off limits for pregnancy. But then again I do eat other 'banned' foods tut tut.
