Pardon my stupidity, but what is a fairy cake?

Sorry for my stupidity, this is your friendly U.S. participant here, wondering what are these fairy cakes everyone is talking about? They sound absolutely wonderful, and I want one. Of course, they probably sound better than what they are. Please don't dissappoint me by teling me they are brown sludgy oatmeal or something like that.

I thought a fairy cake was a little cake in a paper case where you slice of the top and cut that in half. Then put a little butter icing on the top of the cake. Finally, placing the two halves into the icing at angles so they look look like wings!! Hence the fairy cake

Weeellllll, according to my receipe book, my family, my BFs family and everyone I know.....fairy cakes are little cakes in cases with or without icing, raisins etc. If you cut the top (or we cut a little well out with a teaspoon) and make it into wings with buttercream, then thats a BUTTERFLY CAKE. So there

Going to have to go and bake cakes now.

I'd just like to thank you for this thread. I'd wondered about fairycakes when I first came to the UK

sunchowder · 12/05/2004 20:02

Colinsmommy--I too love Mumsnet and I am here in the US too, but I did know what Fairycakes were by injection (my DH is British....). I adore the site, but am hopelessly addicted and work full time on top of trying to run a side business and have two kids at home, so I keep trying to stay away. Welcome to you!

DD2 and I made a batch yesterday afternoon - I shoved some icing on top, then handed over to DD2 to "decorate" with various toppings - jellies, hundreds and thousands, chocolate shavings etc etc.

Very scrummy (had to test to make sure they're OK!!).

(I always add 2-3 tbspoons of milk into the mixture)
