Double Yolkers - what are the odds?

Having just cracked open the 4th double yolker out 5 eggs we've so far used in this pack, what are the odds of that? Presumably that means it's likely these eggs all came from the same chicken, or what?

I've only ever had the very occasional double yolker before and it's really intrigued me...

... yes I lead a sad and lonely life...

The story goes that on the morning my mum and dad got married lots of guests were staying at my grandads house and every yolk broken for breakfast was a double.

Everyone said my mum would have twins.

I turned out to be an only child...but I do have twins

Sorry that doesn't answer you question though does it!?

Same breed of chicken, probably all related.

when we went to visit my great uncle on the farm we were allowed to go and chose our own eggs.

if we got a double yoker he gave us £1. my brother used to try and crack two eggs at the same time to try and convince him it was a double yoker lol

Had 6 from a half dozen last year - never had a single one before or since!

can't you buy boxes of double yolkers... I'm sure I have in the past...

GeorginaA · 26/11/2006 14:54

How do they know rummum? Do they give each one an ultrasound before packing?

For the mumsnet food police I should probably qualify that my egg-twin mums were free range, frollicking every day outside in the glorious sunshine, with a diet free from genetically modified proteins and grains... but not organic

I am assured by a chicken egg producer friend of mine that "teenage" hens tend to lay double yolkers - something to do with the hormones!

TinyGang · 26/11/2006 15:21

'Teenage' hens? I have visions of them clucking 'What-evva!"
