Combi oven/ microwave help!!

Skribble · 26/11/2006 12:21

Just got a microwave with oven.

Not sure if I leave the glass plate and turning ring in when using the normal oven?

What kind of trays can I use when using the normal oven can I use metal roasting pans???

The instructions are very basic and not telling me what I need to know.

You leave the glass turntable and turning ring in - they're oven proof (our turntable is Pyrex). If you're using it just as an oven - you can use anything you would put in your ordinary oven - metal trays etc. You just have to be careful when you are using it on combi microwave and oven - then you just use Pyrex/oven proof non metallic containers.

Well done for asking that one Skribble - and MM for your wise answer

I have been wondering the same thing and always take the turning stuff out just to be on the safe side

Agree the instructions were rubbish.

Hope lunch goes well

Hi, lunch was fine, but roast beef at dinner was a bit chuch, but that was me.

More questions but I will start another thread.

I will ask the questions on combis here...

Whan using the grill and microwave do I use the metal rack too?

What do you use the micro and convection oven for?

What are your best results in the combi? What works really well and what is rubbish?

I have a new microwave with oven, I just use it for heating though as I have no idea how to use all the functions. The instructions were completely useless. I couldn't even figure out how to set the clock using them!

Skribble · 26/11/2006 22:41

I did half baked rolls at lunch time and they were perfect. I think I might use the normal oven function quite a lot as I often roast a small amount of veg at dinner time for myself.

Its the combinations that are confusing me and what to use when cooking.

OK, I'll have a go. My instructions were very vague too - and confusing on things like being able to use a certain percentage of metal in the oven on combi function: I didn't understand how that works so I have always played safe and never use anything metal in mine if I am using any variation of microwave function.

I can't use the grill and microwave together on mine so can't help you there.

Tbh, I rarely use the microwave and oven together - apart from for jacket potatoes, which are just fab done on that combination. I pre-heat the oven to 200, then switch the setting to combi/oven and (depending on size of potatoes) do them for 15 minutes-ish. Proper baked potatoes with crispy skins in a fraction of the time. I think it would work well with roasted vegetables - but I generally do a great big roasting dish of them which won't fit in my combi.

I use the oven a lot though as it's faster to heat up than my big oven - so more economical if I'm only cooking something small. And I use the microwave as normal.

And I have a big confession to make...you know I said the turntable was fine to leave in as it's Pyrex? Mine isn't. I looked at it last night and it has writing round the edge that says "Microwave Use Only" . I've been leaving it in the oven for the last 5 years though and it's never come to any harm...

marthamoo · 27/11/2006 10:14

Oh and if you have a rack (like an oven shelf) that fits in - that's for oven function. Likewise, higher racks are for grilling. I have two circular grill racks that rotate on the turntable - really good for even grilling, and then a large shelf/rack that fills the oven (I can set the turntable not to rotate - seems silly to have it turning when it's not in use).

Skribble · 27/11/2006 14:49

Mmh baked potoatoes sound good I usually do them in the micro then brown in oven if I have time.

There wasn't any other trays or racks with it just the grilling rack and the glass turntable.

I have a couple of big glass dishes that fit but no racks or trays that fit for oven cooking so I might have to go shopping.

Not sure how to use the grilling rack, I am imagining fat dripping allover the place, I will use it though as my old oven and grill are combined and a toal pain to use.

Used grill rack for bacon, was difficult to put in and out and it did drip everywhere. Any ideas?

OP posts:
marthamoo · 28/11/2006 13:48

I have one like that and a much taller one - I use the taller one for sausages, bacon, fish fingers etc.

It is drippy - my door pulls down so I can stand the rack on that to turn food etc., then give it a wipe. Alternatively you could put some kitchen paper on your worktop and stand the rack on that while you turn the food over. And I just wash the turntable whenever I've grilled food in there.

Skribble · 28/11/2006 21:40

I found it difficult trying to lift the rack in and out when it was hot, I ended up lifting out the whole thing on the glass plate. Good thing is the fat drips down so far it doesn't burn or smoke under the grill.

Oven glove...that's what I use.
