Hello there,
I have to make you aware that Tesco selling illegal breakfast cereals for kids. I have purchased cereals for my daughter recently in American section in Tesco. One box was Apple Zings and second Marshmallows Mateys (attached images). My friend who works in food industry for ages saw them and told me that inside of products is Genetically Modified corn as well as unpermitted colours in UK such as tartazine and allura red.

It was something I heard a long time ago and things may well have moved on but aren't all US maize (corn) products assumed to be likely to be GM now?

But what does d you even attempt to buy that sugary crap for a child?? At what? £4 a box?

Was it pester power? You don't seem that clued up....

Oh, I haven't had Apple Jacks in years!!

Yum!

I've had Lucky Charms in the last year or two. They didn't taste nearly as nice as I remembered. Confused

I'm the only one likely to eat those in my house. Blush Neither of my dcs will. This morning they were eating cheerios and rice krispies with no sugar on them while I ate the cocoa rice pops. Grin

Meh. They look kind of gross (and I love most sugary cereal!)

FuckOffJeffrey · 24/08/2015 08:28

These are sold in the American section and are usually well over £5 a box. I think they are marketed towards people who already know and like them rather than the mass UK market looking for cereal for their DC.

My cousins DH is from America and buys this sort of rubbish for himself but says that due the the high sugar content and colourings they are not suitable for his DD. He likes eating this sort of stuff because it reminds him of his childhood.

Did you also notice OP that they put a big sticker over the recommended portion guidelines to comply with UK regulations? If they do that then I doubt the ingredients are illegal as they have obviously assessed the product and met the UK standards by adding stickers to the boxes.

Who are The UK Food Guide? They don't say what what qualifications they have or where they get their information- but the fact that they have a long list of "additives known to cause tantrums" sets alarm bells ringing......

These cereals remind me of visiting my lovely uncle in Houston in the 80's. He got in all this typical American junk food for us to have as a treat, feel nostalgic seeing it again. Even then we knew this kind of food wasn't a daily part of a nutritious breakfast!

JustOneMinuteAtATime · 24/08/2015 08:43

They aren't a fiver a box. Lucky Charms are £3-4 per box and Marshmallow Maties are a rip off of that, they cost a quid or two. I still wouldn't buy them for children, but they are good for an occasional treat as an adult, if you enjoyed Lucky Charms back in the day.

I can't wait to see what Tesco have to say about selling a legal cereal. Perhaps ask them why they are so overpriced while you're at it?

TurnOffTheTv · 24/08/2015 08:47

Are you missing the bit where everyone is telling you THEY ARE NOT ILLEGAL IN THE UK. Just some European countries.

FuckOffJeffrey · 24/08/2015 09:14

JustOneMinuteAtATime lucky charms are £5 a box in my local Tesco. DH was looking at them a few weeks ago for himself and I vetoed them because of the price, I didn't look at the apple ones or the mateys so they may well have been cheaper.

JustOneMinuteAtATime · 24/08/2015 10:37

FuckOffJeffrey Crikey, that's expensive! Marshmallow Maties are much cheaper, but round here, Lucky Charms are about £3 - unless you buy a huge box from Selfridges.

I've never tried the Apple ones so I have no idea if they are nice/worth the cost, but I do love Lucky Charms every once in a while.

I've no idea, but if they are people out to be worried about additives and colouring but even they say that it's not illegal then I guess it must be OK.
