don't know if it would help, but my mum got this herbal stuff once to get her off sugar. IT makes anything with sugar in taste nasty and sandy. I think she got it from the health food shop.

If you go absolutely cold turkey, you will be miserable for a day or two, and then you will adjust. Sugar cravings really suck, but trust me, if you cut out sugar, you will absolutely adjust, and you'll be fine. You'll feel better without the sugar than you did with. (And now that I've really cut down, I can go to a birthday party, and have a slice of cake, and then just go back to eating normally.)

Misdee, you know you have to do this, my mom was diagosed with type 2 in her early 40s, and died at 70 something this year. She would have lived loads longer without the diabetes, it really messes you up. Please take care of yourself.

i managed so well for a week, then i hit a low early this week, and it all went to sh*t.

need to get back on track.

It really sucks, doesn't it. If I'm tired, I start craving sugar, and I do have a bit, but I try to have something high fibre or high protein afterwards or with it, to cut down on the buzz.

I did have a thread on here ages ago asking "real" (i.e. type 1) diabetics about the effects of various foods on their sugars. Interesting stuff.

misdee · 25/11/2006 18:07

i really need the proper support and push each week of a dieting group but cant find one to fit in with my hours 'off' atm. this is so hard to do on my own. considered E-diets, but that would be so easy to ignore the emails.

You could do it on here? I'm sure there are some low-gi diet groups on here?

misdee · 25/11/2006 18:20

oh missdee poor you. I did the cutting out sugar thing a while ago and your body really really craves, but if you resist it does get easier adn then you wonder what all the fuss was about.

Don't buy anything with sugar.
Don't take loose change when you go out.
Tell all your friends and family you are not having sugar.
Get other non sugar treats that you like (nuts? diet coke? diabetic choc from thorntons?)
Get yourself a treat (haircut, new things) if you go a week without sugar.

Best best best wishes to you!

If you want to actually avoid sugar, avoiding things with artificial sweetener in as well is wise, as they just encourage the cravings ...

DimpledThighs · 26/11/2006 00:02

yes agree with NQC on the artifical sweetner front, but you could use then to help with the intial sugar withdrawal.

fireflyxmasfairylights2 · 26/11/2006 00:08

I'm not diabetic, but on a diet, and this evening I have been really craving sweet stuff. I have just toasted 3 slices of weight watchers bread and mashed a banana on top of it, a really runny & sweet banana. Are you allowed natural sugars that are in fruit?

misdee · 26/11/2006 08:08

as long as slow release type sugars. i have high blood suger, just abov the limits the docs like, so am trying to keep everything nice and even, and not have sugar highs followed by a slump (me falling asleep mid afternoon type thing) I have a low GI book here that i am looking through, but really think i need more help
